1972 Havasu OWC Placemats
Thought these would be fun to share. I was 17 and racing in U & S-OPC classes in Hawaii. This was the first "Singles Only" year after Bill Sirois won the previous two with twin "stackers" followed by "Twisters" in 1971. In the "Calcutta auction" wagering, Renato Molinari and Bob Hering were overwhelming favorites to win using then "prototype" C-6 Mercury's. (refrigerators, as Ted May said) Both proceeded to "blow over" before completing the first lap. Many "team" drivers went swimming that Thanksgiving Saturday. I remember 4 ft. "whitecaps" down the back straight. Johnny Sanders won for Johnson, followed by "semi-independent" Mercury driver, Bert Serra. I have many more photos if requested. Enjoy, Steve
