I have been running Mercury premium gear oil it is thicker than high performance gear oil. I have had less trouble since using the thicker oil. It is alot harder to blow out the thicker oil under pressure.

Hey guy's listen to this , I was on another Site corvaircenter.com trying sell a 66 Coravair that I picked up cheap and in reponse to my post a Merc Outboard Engineer responded to a pic I posted of my 32 Skater and said "please keep buying our engines " I responded by saying if Merc keeps on current course they will lose faith by those who love tehm and buy a white engine . I PM this Merc outboard Engineer the last post about bad coils and water in gearcase and he shuged it off like it was nothing . His screen name is aeroautometal

Thicker oil = less MPH !!!! As previously mentioned I think the real problem is expansion . On my imco bravo shortie on my old race boat it was common for fluid level to rise and fall , rise when a whoppin was put to it and after cooling off it would settle . I guess I will have to market a kit like a Bravo !

That is the point I am trying to make brt24, you shouldnt have too Mercury should. Besides with all the technology and synthetic blends you no they make a non expanding gear lube. Mercury figured out how to coat there 300xs piston skirts with teflon for durability I think they can figure out a gear lube that wouldnt expand and fix there gear case problems, but the biggest question of all is why not???????????????

Absolutly! Some already using it. Drill the shift shaft housing for a fitting run a hose the the engine pan hook up the puke tank. Lets it breath and you can keep a eye on the fluid level if it drops you know there is a problem. You can purchase it form Lakeland marine for the 300XS or easy enough make your own.
