Most likely the rectifier is gone. It is a little black box with three terminal post on it.

The grey tach wire should be on one of the post.

It is a cheap part and merc used it on many of the motors.

No problem. That 82 should not have any stabilizers. Just skip the oil system stuff. Just make sure to check the pointer with a dial indicator. No telling who has moved it. Hate to see you set it at what you think is 22* and it be 30*!!!!!! On the front of the air box it should have what to set the timing at.

    Troubleshooting Tach

I need a little help diagnosing a tach problem. How do you measure the signal coming out of regulator through the grey wire? Is it measured as voltage, amps or what? The starboard tach stopped working so I hooked up the grey wire from the port engine and it works. That eliminates the tach as the culprit. I've run diagnostic tests on the stator, trigger, and rev-limiter. All check out. So, it has to be either the regulator or the wring has a short somewhere. How do I check the signal from the regulator? This is on a V-6 Merc; the water-cooled type regulator.
