2000 2.5 Pro Max/ Steering bolts sheered off

Has anyone else had this problem?
Where the hydraulic steering is attached to basically a yoak of the motor. This whole set up is held together by two bolts. They both sheered off and I lost all steering thankfully at the ramp.
Should I replace the part or repair what I have? That would involve drilling and possibly tapping.

No pictures yet. I will try to get some but it's already in process of being repaired. I just wanted to see if there was any feedback from here. I will see if I can get some picture's. But it's at storage write now, so it's not like it's just outside in the garage.

First were you the one to install it?

You have had two great answers thus far.

    Don't over torque.

    Use the correct grade bolts.

The other obvious thing(s) that come to mind is -- were the bolts properly tightened/torqued in the first place.

They could have been to long for the depth of the hole not allowing the bolt head to properly seat against the lock washer. All this allowing slop/play and eventually causing sheer.

What is the proper grade bolt? They are stainless. Anything else I need to know?

I just checked and the one i was talking about is the single tiller bold. it should say ARG on the bolt. I think the same is true for the other two also. I did a search and there is some discutions past about the grade of bolt with part numbers. In still not 100% sure what two you meen though. The two on the outside of the tiller plate? One on each side. Then theres the one single bolt futher aft on the plate under the engine more? http://forums.screamandfly.com/forum...=steering+bolt

OK. What type of Hydraulic steering system do you have? Sea Pro etc.?

Also did/does the system match the horse power and set up for your boat?
There are different systems for different applications.

If all the above mentioned questions posted do not apply then there is something missing here. Was there a bind due to missalignment or
    inproper installation?

I have never had a Sea Pro Hydraulic system fail either mechanically or Hydraulicaly if installed properly.

My final response and questions to this is how do you know they (the bolts) were not loose or to long for the application if they are sheered off? Are they sheered off flush with the tiller arm where the cylinder mounts to? Or is there a stub sticking out?

Long story short. Some folks on this board have been hurt by just that failure at speed. There are very few stainless bolts qualified for that application, and everything else has to be right. That's a rocket science application and hardware store parts don't cut the mustard.

    Do it right, or die.

    hope it helps

Im thought the hydraulic steering bracket attached to the front of the motor with 4 bolts to the clamp bracket .The steering arm attaches to the top of or front of the yoke ,which should have a high strength steering bolt .definatelt need a pic .
