I would shy away from the new Cummins. I have heard horror stories from several people in regards to the new emissions devices on them. Have also heard from a few guys they get piss poor fuel milage 13-15 unloaded. Also, don't know if you will be able to find much performance stuff for it as it has the DPF and "flame thrower" on it. If you want a Cummins get a 5.9.

On the powerstroke side I don't know anything about the new one. The 6.0 is a POS. Mulitple issues with injectors, turbos and head gaskets. Look how long they built them and it tells you something. The only way I'd have one is a 7.3 stroker. Rock's, with 280K I think is a 99, is a 7.3 and it's as stong as an ox.

On the Duramax you cant go wrong really unless you buy an 07 or newer. The only reason I say that is b/c of the emissions stuff added for 07. If you can find a nice used 06 that would be the best bet. Highest HP non 07 emissions truck plus the Allison became a 6spd that year. Any other years are good too. Very strong, reliable package.

get aN 07 WITH THE 5.9.... no 6.7L for a couple years untill we can bypassall the emmissions crap that chokes them down and burns up extra fuel.. 5.9's get 20 average when broke in, and 13-14 towing heavy.. the new 6.7's arent getting 14 empty and get wven w9orse towing..

For my 2002 Duramax...I change the fuel filter twice a year and the oil twice a year. I'm using full synthetic oil...and go @ 7500 miles between oil changes. Also dropped synthetic in the diff's, transfer case and put synthetic tranny fluid in.

Treat your rig nice with quality lubes...and she'll keep rolling down the road for a long time.

    Good Luck,

my 7.3 PSD has 345K on it and ive installed a set of glow plugs, a high pressure pump when i cracked the case and it started leaking, and thats basically it beyond the general fuel filter, oilchange rutine.. the rest of the truck however had more done than i care to mention.

Wow...didn't realize the mileage went down that much with the new motor. It'll be tricky to have a company making parts to defeat the emissions crap...with the federal laws etc. I'm sure someone will...for the Duramax...they made a "Fingerstick and Blocking plate" to take care of the EGR...which pumps in sooted gases right into the intake. I've read some info. on deleting sensors in the exhaust but I'm not sure if that takes care of the Regen. of the soot trap or not....I guess maybe it does. Then a guy can straight pipe the rig...and free up some ponies.

I'm sure there are plenty of smart guys on the case....once solved...I'll just bet that mileage goes up...and fairly dramatically too.

well look at it this way.. they are dumping raw fuel in the exhaust and burning it in the exhaust... not in the engine making power...and they regen once a tank.... the milege los is substantial.... i worked for Altec industries and the new 6.7 and 6.4 equipped sterling 5500's and ford f550's trucks are getting about 7 MPG where as the 5.9 and 6.0 trucks got double that...and these units weighed in around 15K lbs... or your average 1 ton truck, camper, bassbote weight..

my theory is let the damn motors get the best MILEGE possible out of them.. then they will naturally produce less total emmissions.. 1/2 the fuel in... half the chemicals to produce harmfull substances..

old 12V cummins's would see 31+ MPG... new ones only get 14 WTF.... government screws us again..

Man when diesel is $6 a gallon, your gonna hate yourself, get a nice gas 1/2 ton 4x4, it's more truck then you'll ever need. besides your main girl isn't that big, a V6 would haul her little azz around.

Finding a 07 with a 5.9 in it is going to be hit or miss. My guess is they built those up to December 31 06 and badged em as 07's. Either way all the 07 and later diesels have a TON of emmissions stuff on them and the milage sucks.

i know where SEVERAL 07 5.9's are more so than the 6.7's.. there is ZERO difference in the 06- 07 tho... save some $$$ get a better motor and better milege 5.9's that is
