Painting the whole inside... what grit?

hey guys.. this is probably a stupid question but how fine do i need to go on the inside of my boat before i paint it? im not looking for showroom quality, just something that doesnt look like dog s--- ... i also may do a splatter paint on it as well..

i was thinking 180grit is enough....?

single stage? 220, but if you are using a D/A you might be able to get away with 180.

Im using a DA. and I'm painting it with Imron white (maybe blue/grey or blue/silver splatter)

im painting it on with a brush not spray gun, so that should leave it a little thicker too right?

If you're going to use a brush 180 should be fine. Then sometime next year when it gets done you can show us some pictures.

Use Gelcoat. It'll stand up better, may even be cheaper. roll or brush it on..

    I vote for gel too.

It's thicker. You can finish it with only one layer. You can apply it real thick.
It's also very strong and you will not have any trouble with pin holes. If you use paint and there are pin holes you will still see them...

I am as pro-gel as a guy can get, but...

Gel sucks in the interior. it fades easily, it instantly soaks up any amount of dirt/oil and stains, its hard to clean, and durability is a non-issue on the inside of a boat. My whole boat is finished in gel/webbing on the inside, and I'm going to a single stage paint for just those reasons. the only place I'm not painting is directly above the concave pad. water has a small place to sit under the bilge pump and it might blister paint there.

I wouldnt trust gel shot over paint either, although it has been done.

Yo boy, I know you wanna come back to Plymouth so you can walk all over Eastern NC again

The only way you can whoop me in 700' is on foot. Even then it's gonna be iffy

We've got a new site I'm working on a little west of Plymouth that is going to be big fun. And, I think we'll be back in Plymouth soon. That way you & your daddy can come down and play again

Scott, I have done both paint and gel on the floor and if I had to do it again I would use paint. Gel is a pain in the ass.

You better have that thing ready and drag it and yourself over to the Rumble this summer.
