    Stator vs Trigger Coil Problems

    1995 Merc, 150HP, Serial OG146xxx

Problem: No spark on 2 cylinders, 1 each bank.

Is there any reason to think this is a problem from the stator. Talked to two Merc service centers and both suggested stator. I was thinking trigger coil. For the parts costs, I need to run a full diagnostic but I am curious as to your thoughts. Should I be looking elsewhere?

I just found out this site today. Spent most of the day just using the search function and reading posts, WOW!!

    Thanks in Advance

The stator has 2 tapped coils, one feeds each switchbox. Usually 1 whole bank goes out when the stator is bad.

The trigger has 3 coils, each feeding 2 cylinders opposite in timing, ie 1 and 4. If the bad cylinders are opposite in timing, it's the trigger. If not, either both switchboxes or the stator or a couple of coils is bad. This is where diagnostics with a DVA gets economical, both in money and time.

Before I got too excited about definitive diagnostics, I would detail clean and retighten every connection, including all the grounds.

    hope it helps

Swap tha wires on tha coils thats not fire'in, with the one nex to it...if the problem goes to the other coil, U KNOW it ain't a coil...That eliminates one possibility, and don't cost nutt'in!!......

IT'S only a few hours in 2009 and we have a miracle already, I agree with T-REX on something

( about the coil feed wires , if the problem follows the feed wires it ain't the coils.)

Happy 2009 to the Scream and Fly family !

BTW : WELCOME TO SCREAM and FLY , glad to have you aboard !

Thanks. I've already swapped the coil wires and the problem followed the wires so I know it isn't the coils. Figures it wouldn't be a ~$30.00 out in the open problem. When the problem developed I went back to my manual and after studying what each part does, I sort of came to the conclusion that it was probably the trigger. From the symptoms it made sense. When I talked to the service centers they were 'sure fired' it was the stator. They made me doubt if I could comprehend what I was reading. Interesting enough neither had triggers but both had stators. I'll probably be taking my business elsewhere now. I'm going up to the lake in a few minutes with my meter to take some readings. I'll let that lead me to my decision. At the cost of these parts, I don't want to just throw my money at the problem although with twin 150s it probably wouldn't hurt to have some spares on the shelf.

    Thanks for the reassurance.

    ALSO ,
Create a two jumper wire and jump from switch box terminal to coil feed terminal. Sometime the coil wire feed harness can be broke internially..

Just some ideas that could stop the cost of expensive electrical parts..

    Frank,
Which 2 aren't firing. Triggers fire 1-4, 2-5, 3-6. Is there anything in common with yours?

Well just got back from the lake. Checked the stator. I'm in that deep so what the heck. Low speed windings came in at 3.56 and 3.91 X 1000. High speed windings cam back 105 & 109. So that's good. Could not do an output test. Not as fast as I used to be. I can no longer crank the engine and get back to see what the reading is. Amazing, everyone can go fishing on a drop of a hat notice, but ask if they could come up and help troubleshoot and; well you know that story also, I'm sure.

The trigger was a different matter altogether. First tested the offending cylinders (1 & 4)and the reading came back '0'. Can I use a meter? Pulled two more wires from the switch box and that pair was 799. Yup, there it was. BAck to the first pair '0'. I can use a meter!

What bother's me the most, if after telling my symptoms to either service center, they would have confirmed what I was thinking by suggesting the trigger, I would have committed to ordering/buying one on the spot without running any tests. What gets me is both these shops know I do my own work yet they were trying to push a part, and an expensive one at that, that didn't remotely relate to the symptoms. I guess making the $$$ right now in a depressed economy is more important. They just destroyed their credibility with me.

Jay, sent you a pm for prices.

    Frank

I would guess that collectively on this board is about 1000 times more expertise than you would find in an average marine shop.

There are some exceptions, but not many.

Now you have figured out its the trigger. Look and see if the flywheel has been rubbing on the trigger wire. Happens all the time. If so solder it back together and shrink-wrap it for a 50 cent fix.

Would that also explain the low reading on my second pair? Spec for the trigger is between 1100-1400 ohms. When I tested a different pair I came up with 799 so I just stopped looking.

Well, probable not. You definitely could have a defective trigger that the wire has not touched the flywheel. But having said that I have seen stranger things. Have a look at the wire. Triggers are not that expensive to replace anyway. It's just a hassle to pull the switch boxes and flywheel if its only a rubbing wire.
