    OMC Lower Unit Choices

Doing alot of reading here and i am short a lower unit to get my boat back in the water ... Im running a 250hp V6 Evinrude and from what i understand i need a newer style lower unit with the tabbed bearing carrier..They have two styles one with a set bolt for the pinion bearing and one has a retaining clip for the pinion bearing... i would think the one with the set bolt would be better as it was for the commercial units but has been tough to find ... If i am running only 6000 rpms is this a big deal? i know since im running my motor high it will put added stress on the lower ..Thanks !!

The pinion bearing retain by the bolt is much better

if you surface the prop your putting a lot of stress on the LU. the long term solution id to convert to merc sportmaster with the fat shaft. its not cheap but after you loose a couple omc LUs, you'll wish you did.

That sounds like a great idea for the long term ... for right now i think i will stay with a omc unit and see how long i can make it last ..not even sure how im going to like this motor .. lets see before i start throwing money at it ..

still cant find a set bolt style lower ...how much difference will the clip style be ...

I ran the clip style for 13 years on my Sleekcraft with no problems. Mine liked the propshaft about an inch below the pad so maybe that helped it live.

There is no reason to convert to a Merc lower unless you are racing. Even then it's debatable. If you are only going to turn 6k you should never have a problem with an OMC lower as long as you pin the carrier.
