300 XS changes
Has Merc made any changes to the 300XS in the last year or so and/or has anyone heard of any changes coming soon? I need to buy a motor for my boat that will be ready in Feb or so. I can buy a new 300XS with SM 1.62 for $15,100, but it was manufactured in November 2007. I can wait and get one built in 09 in a couple months for $15,900. The warranty will be the same, so the real question is has anything at all been changed by Merc since Nov. 2007?
Anyone ever seen a dyno from 250XS and 300XS? I would like to see the power difference at various rpm. I can get a 250 with 5 year warranty for a little less money but really want the 300.
Thanks, great site!

the 250 pro xs will not come with a sporty if you need one.. the adapter plate is also diff. and will accept a side ram cyl if that is the steering you will be using..

I can swap the lower units on the Pro XS for $1,000. I still would rather have the 300 but am just not sure if I should buy a current one or one built in 07 to save $800. No changes have been made to the actual motor?

What I've heard:
No changes on 300XS.
250 XS = 274 HP
300 XS = 305 HP
300 X = 329 HP (discontinued)
Anybody want to add to that?

$15k was for the 300, 250 is less. It may be the same by the time I ad the SM and sell the TM though.
I've done lots of reading and everything I could find said the power head on the Pro XS and XS were identical. I also know of 2 boats that are same model and same prop (not same actual boat though) one has Pro XS 250 and one has XS 250 and they run very close to the same speed. The one with the Pro XS is actually a touch faster, but I'm sure that is not from the motor.
Any speed comparisons between 250XS and 300XS on the same hull with same lower unit?

Hey josh
But like I emailed you the evinrude guys are not sure of your tests with the Titus unit??? Cause in almost all real deal comparos the 250 Ho will edge out the Pro xs, not always but usually, remember the 250 ho and 300 Etec are the same powerhead,,,,,,Like I said extended warranty,300xs,sporty and go for it.......Im sold on the other brand but that is from consumers, racers, techs, maintenance, high tech nature, and styling, dude the sound of a 250 ho surfacing is better than College Girl Sex!!!!!!

I think it is interesting that new 300XS motors are selling for around 15-16K when X motors were going for high teens new. Why the difference in price?
Anyone have any first hand info on the XS vs the X on the same boat?
Also, is anyone doing any after market parts to hop up the XS?

SCT do you mean 300xs vs.old 300X??? Or do you mean Pro xs vs. xs racing motor as in 250 pro xs vs 250 xs(with the pretty decals) I believe that with the market now you are either gonna see bankruptcies or the smart dealers will have some "hot" deals.....

The Mercury Racing dealer I deal with here in Florida says business is brisk for repower. His customers are keeping their boats and opting to repower, which is what I recently did myself.
Guys here are seeing 2-4 MPH increase when repowering from 250XS to a stroker 300XS on their light fishing boats. Not sure that helps, but it's real world results...

This is what I have recorded on same hull...
250 XS, Lab Bravo 28" = 85 mph
300 XS, Lab Bravo 30" = 88 mph
300 X, Lab Bravo 28" = 93 mph
The old "X" motor will flat out haul @$$!
I do see a bit more top end w/ Pro ET's.

On a bass boat that may be true. But on cat that likes a true surface piercing gearcase, the 250 HO/Lightning combo does not stand a chance against a 250XS/Sportmaster combo.
The 250 HO/Titus test is honest. I am doing my best to get max performance. I am still seeing to much prop slip on that boat (21%). The Stingray shoud be 14%-15%. That would put me in the 72-73 mph range. Not bad for a 2000# hull w/ huge center console.
Compaired the the 75 mph w/ 250Pro XS/Sportmaster (1.62) combo.
All the 250 HO needs is a Sportmaster 1.62 and adapter plate. How would the shift linkage work?
I would be more than happy to disscuss my gearcase needs w/ the "Evinrude guys".Last edited by scb; 12-04-2008 at 12:34 AM.
