ame 4000
what exactly is ame 4000? if doing repairs on an ame 4000 boat, would west system epoxy or another epoxy be suitable?

After searching for AME 4000 with no luck in small quantities I was told about Riechhold Hydrex 100. It is a vinyl ester and was available from Express Composites in Minneapolis, MN in small quantities. After using this stuff we like it so much we are using it instead of our MGS epoxy system. The only drawback we have found is it still smells strong compared to the epoxy....

whats the benefit of using that over the epoxy? what about price difference? cure times? thanks!

Price is a large benefit. While I can't pull numbers off the top of my head the Reichhold was quite a bit cheaper than the epoxy. Vinyl ester has water resistance and strength closer to epoxy than polyesters. Cure time seems faster than epoxy. We don't have to worry about polyester products being compatable with it. One thing we still prefer the epoxy for is when bonding to metal is required...
There are people on this site that have a lot more experience than me with composites and resins, maybe they also have an opinion about Reichhold, but I was searching for a substitute for AME 4000 and the Reichhold Hydrex 100 works good....

Charlie, try www.reichold.com or call 919-990-7876. You may also try Merritt Marine supply...they may carry it. I know they carry West Systems Epoxy and all kinds of glass.

i am going to reshoot the whole boat anyway, considering doing it in urethane, i found a source for vinylester resin(nautical marine supply), 192$ for 5 gallon pail(i ordered it), now what about different cloth types? i have to make portions of the deck, and have a crack that runs along the outermost strake
