1991 Mercury Offshore 275hp
I have a "oppurtunity to buy a 1991 Mercury Offshore 275hp complete motor.
The motor is 2 1/2 hours away, so I want to make sure I do some home work before driving to see the motor. I have only spoke with the seller on the phone, he doesnt know much about this unit. He has the head off and it's a chrome bore motor. Needs a piston.
Is this motor designed around a 2.5 block or 2.4 block or totally another block?
What aftermark parts are available for this motor?
Can anyone tell me more about the motor?
Thank You!Last edited by SAMMYBOY; 11-14-2008 at 08:02 PM. Reason: add picture

3.4 liter block. Parts are very scarce. NOT a high rpm motor by any means 5800 tops. Meant to push huge tugs not to go fast. If used within it's respective parameters they were a great motor. I'd love to find one in one piece.

Once in a while I see parts for these... but not often! Roll the dice if you buy it!

3.4's are more for collectors than users now. As someone else said, they're dependable if used within their limitations, but there's very little that'll interchange with any other Merc V6 other than maybe the prop nut. Parts are a scavenger hunt and the lower unit is the weak point and expen$ive if it gives up, which they frequently do.
It would have to be SUPER CHEAP for it to be worth you foolin' with.Membership upgrade options: http://www.screamandfly.com/payments.php

You made a wise choice Sammy passing on that motor, I have never seen but one and it wouldn't get out of its own way...

I got two on my Scarab, they run great. ANd there are a few shops that have some parts on their shelves. Finding parts is not that big of an issue because it doesn't break. Id buy that engine for spares if I was closer. Not worth shipping it all the way to FL.
