I don't have a DISASSEMBLED T2 at my easy reach, but did look at one of mine that's together and it has the larger adapter plate (a little over 3 1/2" measured with a tapemeasure in a dimly lit room), and it has a 1500XS gearcase on it. I don't believe the shaft was shortened on this gearcase to run it on this engine.

Here's what I DO HAVE scattered though, and it should answer your question, since the relationship between the mounting flange on the powerhead and the depth of the crankshaft spline on a 1500 and a T2 is the same. (again, measured in a room with poor lights and a tapemeasure)

    1500XS stuff:

Driveshaft is approx 17 3/4" from mounting flange to top of spline

    1500XS mid is approx. 16 5/16"

This would lead us to believe that the driveshaft sticks up above the powerhead mounting surface approximately 1 7/16" to the top of the spline.

So the 3 3/4 adapter is going to be the one you'll need. The shorter one will have the driveshaft sticking up approx 7/8" too far.

If we add 1/16" to your measurement we're up to 1-8/16" ( 1.5" ) , 1/16 would just about the thickness of the 2 gaskets + the steel plate for the pan....

Since I brought up the steel plate..... where should it be mounted ?
Should the lower pan itself be mounted above or under the steel plate ??

Those who mounted this engine together the last time didn't intent to make it running, they just wanted a racing engine to have on display in their shop, probably worked on by a clerk or temp....

I think I am on the right track now , still missing some small parts and needs some more answerers but the world haven't heard the last roar from this T2 yet .

If you are referring to the plate that is one the pan, use two gaskets, one on either side. The plate is mounted on top of the plastic pan.

    The ANSWERE

Left bearing ARE the same as used on the later SSM VI (# 31-70087A1 aka Timken HM81649 + HM81610 BUT the cone ARE modified by Mercury )
Right bearing are a 31-38681A1 aka Timken HM81649 + HM81610... cone and cup are unmodified .

Those bearings in question are the front propshaft bearing ( just inside the nosecone )

31-38681A1 are also used on top of the short driveshaft in the old SUPER Speedmaster ( ALL supers ) + the newer SSM VI .

If you order the bearing from Merc, it comes as you have it pictured with machining to inner bore already done.

    Calculated risk

Know that the SSM VI shaft got the same splines for the gears + it uses the same nut at the front.... this tells me that it's the same diameter as the older Super ( diameter for the hole in the cone )...

The SSM VI uses the same tools for setting up the gears ( some not all ), one of the tools it's the gauge ( #91-39575 ) that's inserted into the housing to set the shimming for the propshaft ... this tells it got the same cup diameter...

I got an old SSM VI propshaft.... compared this one to the Supers shaft... got the same spline length... therefore it needed the same mod on the cone

And I got some advises from JAFFA here on S&F

    Droll,
Where did you get a parts manual for a SSM unit? Can you share this information with me?

    Thank you!,

It wasn't found, it was made by collecting pieces of information online :-), my file is widely spread around, have also seen someone selling it on eBay claiming it to be some lost Mercury document's, it is NOT ..

It's based on some old scanned files, probably from Mercury, but rewritten and added more information by me...

Added some other files of interest too
Some info about the Tillotson Tc3A carb, originally made up for the 650XS , but valid for the T2/T2x too
And some timing info, probably found on this site a long time ago...
