Repower advice: OptiMax or rebuild 2.5EFI

Repowering my 18 foot Charger ski boat. Options are new 225 OptiMax with sportmaster or rebuild 2.5 EFI, possibly with new 225 promax powerhead. Looking for advise on which way to go. Concerned with weight of OptiMax at 500 lbs. Thanks in advance.

I like my 225 XS Pro so far

I just got it in Sept, it is a 2006 model. It uses a lot less gas than my old 2.4 200 and has a lot more grunt too.

It is a bit heavier though.

It sits taller on the transom so the ski rope just clears.

The GPS says we have put 615 miles on it so far.

Looked at the 175 XS as option (lighter) but wanted to get more performance. Marina suggested 85 mph was possible with 225 Opti with sportmaster or consider rebuild of older 2.5 . See that some manufacturers do not recommend 3.0L engines due to weight.

I think it could take the weight of the big motor, and you'd burn a lot less gas. My brother's DL has a 450 lb 200 Johnson on it, no setback. He gets top speed at max trim.

If you go for the big optimax, get the XS, and as little setback as possible.

200XS gives you over 200hp and keeps the weight down with the 2.5L. If your skiing it then you will get the extra benefit of good gas mileage to boot?
