    turbo outboard???

please tell me at some point in time someone had made a turbo outboard? i am turbo nut (my plymouth is getting the treatment as we speak) and would love to see or know of some history on a turbo outboard. i wonder how performance would be as it might be tough in a race scene as far as boats are concerned since of lag. would make some acceleration once spooled i would think! someone must have tried it though. i didnt google it yet though. thanks.

I am sure many here heard of and saw the Land & Sea turbo Mercury which powered an Allison boat to 130 mph back in about 1983-84. Not sure how reliable it was.

There was also a twin turbo Merc that someone was tinkering with back in the late 70's but the project lost tech support when the factory race group was dissolved. But to answer your question, yes it has been accomplished.

Hmmm...how about a mini turbine powerhead. Anybody tried that?

I thought Mercury still backed Racing. Isn't the mercury HP Division that builds the drag motors, and the offshore race engines part of Mercury Racing. I know OMC got out of racing, but didn't know of Mercury doing it.

Mercury still has a successful racing division. When Mercury disbanded the factory team many independents lost some support because key people at Merc where helping independent racers. Remember that this was back in the 70's and Mercury did not offer a choice of Hi Performance products like they do now.

I was talking to a guy last year who said he had turboed a merc.
    He said it worked great.
He tried it blowing through and sucking through said the sucking was easier.
Its a small turbo used on snowmobiles and has its own lube system.
You can see on the first one were he moved the mag to the other side of the engine.
    Dale!

What I meant was that Mercury has always had "Racing" engines. Sure, in the 70's there was the T2, T2X, T3 and smaller engines like the 650xs. But how much of that was available to Joe Public? Merc Hi Performance, in recent years has offered more products available for bass, offshore, offshore race and closed course racing than ever, which I think is great....and I am not even a die hard Merc guy!

Now I understand ... yes, in times gone by Merc did not "retail" the race motors as "high performance" motors to the general public
