SMAW (stick) welding stainless.
Yea, I know, TIG it... I will. What I want to do first is get everything cut and tacked into place on the truck, then take it out and fully TIG it at work. The only thing I have at home is a 200A Miller DC box. My question is, what kind of stick for 16ga to 1/4" 304SS? How does it work compared to a 6011 rod on steel? Any tips that will make my life easier? Thanks.

Use a 308L rod, and do a trial run to set your heat. It welds like a 7018 rod...

excellent, thanks for the info. If I can get a decent tack in 4 or 6 places around the pipe I'll be happy with it.
I also came across this page while searching, which is helpful for a n00b like me. http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/> Stainless steel Merc cowling plates - $110 shipped TYD - LINK <

I actually ended up snagging a tig rig from work to do it. From what little I played with the stainless sticks, they worked fine, but it obviously didnt have the neat appearance of a tig weld.

just mind the flux......unlike steel flux the stainless flux pops off as the weld is cooling....... keep you helmet down using the flap or safety glasses under the helmet and as to 16 guage with stick rod........ good luck 10 guage or better yes yes i know even for tacking......
