A little progress today, I decided to try and cut the seatbox out as one piece to use it as a template for building a new one down the road. From what I have read in the past, most guys when they got to this point had waterlogged foam and the box surrendered fairly easily. Not so in this case.

I used a 3.5" cutoff wheel on the tight outer areas and a sawzall to cut along the hull and floor front and back. Starting with a 5" all the way around I came to the conclusion after some prodding that the foam was in tact and completely dry, which sucks because I'd have liked to leave the seatbox in the boat but there was rot along the floor register up under the seatbox so it had to come out. I was under the impression that the seatbox was built with an open bottom, glassed in and then filled with foam (excuse my rookie boat building knowledge) but I found after cutting it into 3rd's that it was glassed on all sides and filled with foam from what looks like the left and right front corners THEN glassed into the boat. I finally found something that appears remotely over-engineered and well-constructed....amazing. I ran out of time tonight due to other obligations but these pics give you an idea of how well the seatbox was put together in this boat, and I assume its big brothers as well.

I'm not making any huge progress but I figure a little bit every day still gets the job done come spring.......

After 2/3's of the seatbox was out. Even the drainbacks along the floor register were heavily glassed on the inside. Water never penetrated this area

I'm no mechanical engineer by any means, but from the way this piece was constructed, and the position within the boat, it has to provide a significant amount of rigidity across the middle of the hull. It will be rebuilt from scratch in a similar manner minus the foam.

I know Jeff planned on racing his w/ V4 power and was concerned about weight. I'm sure he'll chime in here at some point and explain the method to his madness.

I gots tandem seating. No need for the beamwise strength as only one person seated there. No air tank in mine either.

Lots of strength to be gained tieing the top of the stringers to the underside of the floor.

Speak of the devil!!! in short order as well!

I'm obligated to replace mine because i'm going to reuse the original seating since the vinyl is in such good shape.

When I cut out a section of floor Jeff, it looked like mine had been attached to the top of the stringers with glass and resin. Check out the older pics...

Older indeed sir, but restored beautifully....I just hope I learn something from your thread and several others and be as fortunate once it is done.

Jeff, how much does your boat weigh rigged with you in it???

Jeff, I'm always amazed at the difference in construction between these boats. Mine was constructed as you thought yours was, I.E. it was one piece, 4 sides and a top with foam filling the whole thing. I cut it out like you wanted to do yours, sawzall along the front and back edge, and cutting wheel on the sides. Mine came out in one piece. It had no bottom other than the floor underneath it. The wood was rotten everywhere, the 'glass was the only solid structure left.

On my thread, John Tiger (JWT) mentioned that the seat box was also a 'torque bridge' to add torsional stiffness to the hull.

My stringers were put in before the core and the core laid around them. A couple others that I have read about had the stringers installed on top of the core.
OK, I got down off the porch and ran with the big dogs....kinda sore now....think I'll just lay here in the flowerbed for a while...
