Recently purchased a 300xs for my 21' Contender. Hope to get at least 1000 hours out of her. I did a lot of research before purchasing and this sounded like an awesome setup. So far, she does about 62 mph.

A 21' Conternder with a 300HP on it is my idea of a sweat rig, Fast, ski-able, handle chop, good stable boat to party with babes in.

On the other hand, my 04 Opti 250 jet has only 90 hours on it. It spent the last two summers in the shop. Still no diagnosis. (Recommend buying now if you're seriously considering as apparently I'm not the only one with such problems. Merc adding a couple years to warranty for free...) In any case, only get one with extended warranty, include that in the true cost IMO, or don't take the risk. Merc won't even discuss investigating why this engine a lemon.

its a JET.. that is 2/3's your issue..... put a prop on it, load the motor properly and 99% of the issues go away... jets dont properly load the engine at low RPM, and over load at top RPM so the computer gets all screwy and fuel delivery suffers.. and then u have problems with all sorts of systems.. and BY LAW merc doesnt have to warranty that motor you put an aftermarket drive system on it at a dealer level, OBJ (outboard jet) has zero affiliation with mercury for that engine and thus they dont hve to offer an honor on your warranty either. or investigate your "lemon" because it vary easily be the pump causing the problems
jet systems are notorious for not properly allowing the engine to be ran in their reccomended RPM range,,, they are either low or to high..Last edited by 150aintenuff; 01-08-2009 at 06:34 PM.
