What kind of tires are on your trailer? Mine suck!

Lost a Goodyear Marathon this spring that was just under 3 years old, the other one took a crap coming home from Tenn on Sunday. Always stored inside, always 50lbs pressure. My old marathons lasted 9 years before the tread came off. That was when they said they are too old. What is "reasonable"?

Would light truck tires be better? I have 15" rims on the trailer.

    Thanks for your opinions

carlisle here, they seem to hold up good considering how long my POS sits between 100 mile trips at 85mph behind my truck.

I have had the Goodyear Marathons and the Carlisle radials [4 total] seperate when they were only two years old. I asked my Tire dealer [who I give our fleet business to] and he told me that every trailer tire in America is now made in China, no matter what brand.
I pulled off the two two year Carlisles and put Goodrichs on there. I am sick of having tires seperate and scratch my gel coat/tear off my trailer fenders.

Goodrich is now owned by Michelin, a french company. (Found this out just after I bought the last set for the wife's car. I'll hang on to them, but I expect them to chicken out sometime....) I've heard most of their tires are made in Mexico now. I'm sticking with my Goodyear Marathons. Many, MANY miles and No problems that weren't hazard related. And I think most of the production for here is at least in North America.

i run a federal something or other cheepo car tire on the hydrostreams trailer.. jus set to max pressure (35) and they are GREAT.. never any issue... but they also rated for `1400 lbs a tire and the bote riged on the trailer weighs 1450... on our sled we run carlilse never had any real issues.. just after about 6 yrs of abuse and sun they start to blead off the pressure and we replace them when they sit and go flat over a couple week period.. i put a set of michelin LT tires on another bote and they lasted FOREVER... something like 15 yrs... but those were always stored indoors..

key to any tire is weight rating compared to load and tread ply thickness and side wall ply thickness... regardless if trailer specific tire or automotive or LT tires.... get a good tire that can support 1.5 times the weight of your hull and trailer combo and you will never have any issues

4-16-2014. 25 years old today... the fishin boat doesnt look to bad for a classic does she

things that were are no longer as they are today...

I wouldn't run a car tire for nothing. Been there ... won't do that again. Bump one curb and the side wall is toast.

Denman Express S/T Radials are your best option. I learned about them a few years back from a thread on The Hull Truth. My last set were taken off and handed down to a friend at 25,000 miles. Not even a single issue with them at all.

I have talked numerous friends, family and forum brothers into using them and not one complaint.

Denman is an American company that manufactures specialty tires. Their Express radials are designed for trailers and the cost is very reasonable. I would only use a tire with "S/T" (special tire for trailer application) on my trailers. The radials create less rolling resistance and cushion road shock up to the trailer and boat.

Don't forget to have them balanced. An unbalanced tire wears quicker and transmits vibration throughout the rig. Yes, I'm anal about my ****!
