The guy who was killed was a member of local 15. These guys do the Maintence for us on the cranes. His name was Anthony Esposito. He left behind a wife and three kids. Guys who saw the fall said that his body seemed to float in the air. Anyway he is with God now. This is a tough bizz. The crane he fell from was on the same building in the backroud of my latest picture. There was two cranes at the site of a 62 story residential tower they were jacking one down when the accident occured.

Unions are good for some, bad for others. They are like everything, they
have their good and bad points as well. But to say Union built is better and
safer is out to lunch in my opinion.

My Dad worked in local 14 an 15 his whole life from the World Trade Center Verranzano Bride , GW Bridge , Tri borough , Throgs Neck , Tappann Zee Bridge , Lincoln hospital , Trump towers etc . He is the reason I have had a great life . Now things are different for sure . I don't really have an opinion on this one but in the past , the International Union of Operating Engineers was my life !! Lots of people get killed in construction on this level , i have known several . Please don't judge these Unions by the acts of a few .

That may be but, your unions are trying their best to persuade their members to vote for Obama.
I find it totally pathetic they are using their influence on their members in such a fashion its absolutely deplorable.

Well I guess I'll be the callous POS that calls attention this... Was it Union quality (or so you call it) that built that crane? Provided the safety equipment? How many have fell and why? I remember an investigation but don't remember the end results... Been occupied with hurricanes and such.. ya know!

I went through apprentice school ( 4 years local 450 Operating Engineers Union , My Dad retired local 211 Pipe Fitters Union all from Houston ) before I went to work at EXXON , BTW :I was President of the Union there ( Exxon ) for 5 years over Chemical Plant complex...( Total 3000 workers )

Everyones got an opinion about em ( Unions ) , most believe if your union its better most that are non union think their system is better . All I KNOW is that when I worked in the Building Trades my pay scale was MORE than non union .. I did and most with a brain should agree they are in it ( working ) for the fiance NOT the romance, so Union was better for me and my family.

AS far as the quality of work performed I'll have to agree with Union apprenticeship systems turn out MORE skilled crafts people rather than jerking some Non Union's foreman's kid off the High School lunch line and paying him journiman's wages as that can and is the "Norm" at non union systems BUT NOT SO at a Union site. Heck why not have a un skilled "Joe Blow" take out your kids appendix that had NO FORMAL training it would be cheaper OR pay a guy thats went to school to do the job correctly and saftely and feel that your kid is in a skilled persons hands ?

The newbies have to go through formal classroom schooling and pass with 90 % for 4 to 5 years before they are qualified to make the top money. I hated to work all day and 3 days a week I had to drive sometimes 100 mile round trip go to school for 4 hours for 4 years until I was a 1st class Operator..

No system is perfect BUT the more training a apprentice ( Newbie ) gets the better work they can turn out and the safer a job will be. IMO thats just common sense...More training = Better Skills = Better Crafts person I see that as a No Brainer ...

But to each his own ! I've worked around both ALL MY adult working life
( Over 36 years ) and thats my "take" on the discussion..

I'm gonna stay outta this one! Gotta ex-friend that's in the plumbers union. Never saw such a thief and slacker. Had to cost his company over $10-$20 grand a year just in what he stole! I know, it was'nt the unions fault, but they made it possible for him to stay employed. He would have been the same union or not. Difference is, he gets to rip off his employer every day. He's what give unions a bad name.
