Primer Ball - 300xs
Do you have to use a primer ball on the 300xs? I was told by a Merc tech it was not needed.

I use a 3-4 lb electric fuel pump on all my motors to keep them primed. No primer bulb needed. I have it wired to the ignition.

Go to your local auto parts store. You can get the 2-4 lb, or 4-7 lb. If you run saltwater, use the plastic type. If you can't find one, I can sell you one for $55.

There is nothing wrong with using a Merc Primer Bulb with any Optimax. Primer bulbs are NOT to be used with Verados.

Yeah, primer bulbs work fine, but are just ugly and a pain to have to pump up all the time.

Why would you have to pump it all the time? If the fuel system is working properly on an Opti, you should only have to prime it if you run it out of fuel. On my rig, (I know, it is a Rude and not a Merc) it has a primer ball....but in the 2.5years and almost 200hrs I have put on it, I have never, not even once, touched the primer bulb. I back the boat in, turn the key, let the system check lights check and go out, then start the motor. Starts on the first revolution every time. Do the same thing on the rigs with the Opti motors. Anything with a DI motor I have never touched the primer bulb and never had an issue....

I have one
Get one with big fittings. When mine sits for weeks sometimes the bulb is soft.

The only time I prime my Opti (primer ball) is after changing the hull mounted Racor or the engine mounted filter.
