Did you replace the riser gaskets? Did you pressure test the block?

    Very Common

You are not alone, in the last 4 months friends with the same motors have had the same problems.

The exhaust minfolds/headers seem to be the problem. The water jacketed stainless headers all crack after so many seasons. And the manifolds can leak or suck water back in the cyclinders if you don't have a realy downward bend. The rear cylinders seem to be the ones most affected.

I don't know if this an option for you, but one fix that I am aware of is to dry out the exhaust. In other words run water diverters out the sides of the boat. It's something to look into. My friend Dean is running 540's in a 35 cigarette mistress, his started having the same problems as you. He will be going to a dry exhasust this winter.

Lastly, you said the heads were done. Was the block checked for warp???. Sometimes you have to deck the block before you slap the heads back on. You have to use a straight edge across the cyclinders and break out the feeler guage set. The manual should say how many thousandths of an inch is acceptable.

How much was taken off the heads?

    Was the intake also milled/refitted?

    6? and 7, not 7 & 8 ?

Look/see the last intake gaskets VERY carefully.

My 496 leaks into #7 on shut down I open the manifold drains and before I run her I pull #7 plug turn her over till clear then fire her up. She's fine while running. Its the manifolds their warped a tad between the base and riser. When the seasons over and the motor goes for its fall rebuild their getting faced too and some custom graphite steel core gaskets made.
