93 Johnson 200 Venom rebuild?
Ok guys,
after reading and reading I am convinced that I want to add a little more power with the rebuild I am about to do.....
1993 Johnson 200 venom (VJ200SLETC) Serial # G03203074
Bought the boat this spring, have redone the hull (93 hydra sports LS200) and after a few times out blew a head gasket! after pulling the head discovered some dings in one piston, as if it had started to lose a ring? My neighbor just happens to be somewhat of a marine mechanic and is willing to assist with a rebuild after I get all the parts. I have done the usual ebay searches and found a few "KITS" with pistons, rings rod and wrist bearings....etc for around $750 are there a few "simple mods" that I can do without breaking the bank? or being to hi performance for a weekend bass boat? I dont want to sink a ton of cash into it seeings it is 15 years old, but a little exra HP sure would be nice for a summer or two.
Suggestions wanted. Anyone have parts I could use?

You can get better parts cheaper from a ProMarine dealer. Stay away from the ebay kits because most of them use Sierra parts. Clean up the porting, cut the heads a little or get 331490 heads, plastic reeds, use mid bore carbs and play with the jetting. Don't forget to make sure all of the holes are round. You'll be surprised at the difference,

I believe the 200Venom already came with the mid bore 225 carbs. Not sure though.

ok..nevermind. I thought the Venom and Vindicator motors were similar to the newer "HO" models.

Well i found some heads on ebay...just hope to catch the end of the auction. also found the carbs from a 225 Pretty sure the seller is a Scream and Fly member (2strokeonly) has a fresh powerhead that has me thinking long and hard on which way I want to go!! rebuild my block or buy one and mount my electrics? decisions, decisions!

That is Instigator that has those heads and the rest of that stuff. You would probably come out better in the long run buying that power head, heads, and carbs. Bolt it all on and you're ready to go.

awww thats just not right!!! if it stays around a grand Its all mine!!! lol i did some looking and I guess I can have it shipped for around $300-350 just not sure i want to spend $2800 this week! did some more lookiing around for rebuild kits, anyone ever used http://www.powerheadkit.com/ They have a decent looking kit for $995 have sent an email asking some questions, but looks like Wisco pistons and just about everything i would need except center and upper crank bearings....well, if i need them? oh yeah whats the bennifits to using caged wrist pins versus loose? is it just an easier install or are they any better/worse as far as performance or life span?

OK, one more time. Forget about the rebuild "kits". You can buy every part you need for less than the "kit". And if the power head stays around a grand why would you even think of rebuilding for the same price?

Don't go with the kit. BTW anything you get from Instigator will be exactly what he says it is. No smoke and mirrors there. Well..maybe some 2-stroke smoke.

trust me if I can get the powerhead for around a grand I will be all over it! but I dont think it will stay at that price for long! i cant swing $3000 right now to do the buy now and shipping..... I figure the rebuild would be more cost effective? the "kits" seem to have all the stuff i need for less than I have seen in pieces/parts 6 Wiseco piston sets are just over $600, the rod bearings are around $45-$50 each = $300, then theres wrist pin bearings for 15 each unless I am looking in all the wrong places? or am I just buying stuff I dont need? would like to save my $$$ for other things trust me.
