    Towing with a Mustang

Believe it, or not, I've been towing my boats with my everyday car. It's a '71 Mach 1 Mustang, and it's stock with the exception of a trans cooler and a shift kit . Been towing with it since '92 ( 16 years now), and no complaints. The car has enough power, and my trailers(I have four boats) have their own brakes, so I'm good.
People really get a kick out of me towing a hot inboard with a musclecar. Before the Mach 1, I towed with my '70 olds w-30 442. that car had torque like a diesel. Lots of guys used to tow with El-Caminos and Rancheros.
My boats are 18'and fit in the garage, if you buy a boat the size of a small cabin, expect to have to tow with that Turbo-Diesel double throw down Super-Duty........................Spike

    Red Alert,
The Mach 1 has a 351 Cleveland, FMX trans, and a 9" traction-lock rear with 3:50 gears. It just keeps on keepin' on. Suprisingly, no matter whether there's a blown hydro, or my injected flat on the hitch, people still ask about the car. It's crazy. Spike

Towed my 21 liberator with a 2005 Mustang GT Convertible. It actually handled the boat better than my wifes SUV. It was awesome heading to the lake with the top down. Got a lot of looks.

    Hey guys!,
It's cool to see the neat ways people tow their boats, there's some nice vehicles out there with hitches!
My God, just be thankfull this thread isn't going the direction of that "Toyota vs. Chevy" thread. That's just awful.

    Ski Boater,
That's the way to do it..... Nice. Cool thing is as well, when you're not using the boat ( the other 300 plus days a year), you're not paying for gas and insurance on a huge vehicle, and you've got something different and unique to tool around in every day. Spike

That 2 door wagon intrigues me. What is it? Almost looks like a Ranchero with a roof.
Never saw any of those in our Country.

yea thats funny the problem is that I sold the Checkmate and bought a 18 foot Talon......I then sold the car ( big mistake).....now I have 24 Skater and I dont think my old 32 would be able to stop it with manual brakes and steering ..how ever getting it rolling wouldn't have been an issue with 45o hp and a locker in the rear......24 foot boat behind a 15 foot car

    Hottrucks,
You know, there used to be a time (I'm giving away my age), when the average car was capable of towing. Engines were big, transmissions were big, brakes were big, heck, lets face it, cars used to be bigger.
With fuel economy concerns these days, it's gotten to the point that no one makes a "car" really today that tows well. Today, you HAVE TO buy a truck damn near. There's a lot of people who also have bought HUGE (read that "ocean going") sized boats, and those prople CAN'T tow with anything less that a Sherman Tank.
Having a pick-up truck is one thing, but, (again, this is just MY opinion), if you have to buy a major sized towing vehicle just to pull your boat, maybe, maybe you should reconsider buying the Queen Mary.
The other side of it is that it's enjoyable to drive a vehicle that you don't see everyday,...everyday.
The reality, really is the size of the boat you're trying to pull, and stop, that dictates our tastes in tow vehicles, or we'd all probably be driving economical hybrids!
    Spike
