Leak Down test
I took my 280 to a dealer to check electrionics, they call me said leak down 18% on three cylinders, 11.5% or more on others. The said motor tired cause it has 215 hours.
I have about 75 hours on new rings top pinned pistons. My leakdown with Baltz tester following his instructions is 2.5% on 4 cylinders 6% on 1 and 5.5% on 1. Even a off TDC still below 10% on worst cylinder. Is there a difference between testers? Any one else been through this
Thanks
Gary

Would'nt think so Gary. I've found the Balzy tester has been bullet proof for me . Maybe your mechanic has'nt reached his quota this month.
I will say I find that bore prep with proper tools is CRITICAL at re ring time to insure a long ring/bore life after rebuild.
IMO : To do a successfull long life coated bored motor rebuild a guy needs the following tools to prep a bore correctly : :
ID Dial bore gauge, bore straightener tool , proper grit hones and brush without these tools and an operator using them tools thats got some SAVY of the Mercury coated bored engine sometimes rebuilds are very short lived and a waste of time..

Some leakdown test kits have different sized orifices for different sized cylinders. Fit everything from airplanes to weedeaters. So his numbers may be different. But I believe I would trust your test over theirs.

I must be paranoid!! if you took it in for electronic tests, I would question why they say they did a leak down?, and their results. especially considering the different results..just me, but I always remember Ben Dover..

I'm with johnt on this one! Why did they perform a leakdown test when
you asked for an electrical test? If I brought my car in for an oil change
and they replaced my oil pan... I would be pissed!

"up sell" I'd call it a "HUMPING" doing a test you didn't order or the troubleshooting path to a problem required..

Exactly, no reason to do leak down test at all.... Quote from dealer on phone "Gary, your motor is tired, that motors got 215 hours we got leak down at 18%, If you want to use a motor at 20% leak down thats up to you, but.."
When I told him about the rebuild he said, "Oh, maybe the engine was dry We'll have to check it again. Couldn't wait to go get the boat away from them.

I'd be looking for a new dealer at this point. Redo the leakdown with your equipment and see if your numbers repeat. If they do you're good to go
