1989 Evinrude 150 XP vs. 1986 Evinrude 150 Special Edition

I have a 1989 Evinrude 150 xp and 1986 Evinrude 150 Special Edition. What are the major differences between these two motors? Are they basically the same or is one better than the other. Assuming they are both in good working condition, should there be any difference in their performance?

The XP is on a Hydrostream Vasserette and the Special Edition is on a Switzer SK175.

    Thanks for you input.

I'm not real sure if there's a big difference between a limited edition and XP's. i'll have to talk to some of the boy's at work and see. Have you ever swapped motors on the boats to see if the boats performance changes with the different motor.

The model number should tell the story. Check it on the small round casting plug on the top of the port cylinder bank on the powerhead. The 89 engine should carry a model number of 150S, which is the high perf version of the 150-actually rated at 165. What is the model number on the 86? The 89 has the single pack and that came with a couple of nice features, the SLOW system and Quickstart.

381 lbs. on the xp They had tighter heads and tighter mounts but the mounts had a tendancy to get REAL sloppy over time. Great engines other than the mounts, good power and last forever. Mine was great on gas for a carbed V6.

Thanks for the info on weight. It is on a 19 ft VIP bass boat I plan on puting mine in the shop for a carb rebuild and a set of Boysen reeds. Most of the use at this time is the kids are dragging around the grandchildren.

They are both XP motors. Almost identical. The special edition just had a different paint job and the louvers were on the side near the top at the back or the cowl. Weight was about the same. Both put out 165 at the prop.
