As said on numerous threads, take off the oiler if the motor has any age on it. Shave heads and change stock reeds. Other than that the mods will go as your wallet goes!

Rockdamage, this should be an interesting thread assuming you get enough input on it, I've often wondered the differences in tuning an outboard for a jet vs. for a prop. due to the way a jet loads the motor there must be some slight difference in tuning. maybe not, but this one should be interesting if someone with 2.5 jet experience will chime in.

    200 efi

i have a 200 efi. heads, reeds, and bobs tuner are reasonably cheap mods. dont waste a bunch of money unless you plan to port inside engine. they need porting to breath better.

I am sure this has been asked many times.....I have a 93 200 EFI I replaced the tuner with one out of a promax (I think, It is belled like a Bobs only it is made by Merc) Removed the liner and drilled holes in the mid. I plan on replacing the reeds and cutting the heads. My question is...will it perform as well as an equivelant year stock 225?

No.. The 225PM is a 7/14 petal front half motor yours is a 5/10 petal. The PM does have a little more agressive work in the chest area and also an ECU with a 6750 rpm limiter..

The reeds and Tuner are not going to get you much if anything. The 200 tuner is not a bad one like the 150hp is. The removal of the can and drilling the mid will help some , especially if you run over the hub props(If you run through hubs you might have a problem getting the motor to spin up on holeshot from lack of ventilation) but does make them sound great...

The increase in compression is your biggest gain and you might also look into getting the ECU flashed to an A5 or A11 200PM program...

If its not going to see more than 6000 RPM tighter heads are the only thing that will do anything. If you want to go with more RPM I would go with an SVS, Brucato ECU and reeds.

What is the going rate on having heads cut, and who should I send them to?

To me of coarse I charge $100.00 for both or $150.00 for a 2 degree squish band cut.

On a heavy boat and 6K operation, the 5 peddle front will make more power than the 14peddle mota....

Any HP increase kum's wit a RPM increase...If U gunna stay @ 6K or less, U want a torque'r, which iz 5 peddle front/ stock 5 peddle reed cages, smaller venturi carbs or adjustable ECU, stiff reeds, cut heds, and long tuner...Thro on a 2:1 geer and U kan pull stumps!!

I was told that I should run fiber reeds to help protect the mota incase it should suck a reed. Any logic to this?

My boat needs a 3 liter bad!

if its just a fishin rig, sell what you have and use the funds to buy a 200 225 promax. Pro max will have solid mounts, better charging system, little higher comp. Other than shaving your heads, you will be dumping money down a well. You will end up with about the same $$$ invested and you will kill the resell value of what you have. Certainly there are guys that can modify what you have, but you will be putting $$$ in their bank account. no offense intended. Just my .o2cts..

I know what you mean... Where are you wanting to pep your up at? IF you are looking for a little better holeshot or a little better top end the head milling and getting the limiter raised will help both. Raising the limiter will allow you to run an inch or so less pitch on the prop which will help the holeshot and due to the increase in rev potential you will still run good on top...

I am several years away from being able to purchase a different motor so I am stuck with what I have. I am not going to dump a ton of money in the motor I have but I would like to get all I can out of it for what little money I will spend. Solid mounts and exhaust was done over the winter. I will probably go ahead with reeds and head cut. right now I am not getting enough RPM to need to raise the limiter. 5800 at 72mph with a 26 trophy. Holeshot is sluggish. I am sure the exhaust work will hurt the holeshot but I am hoping to gain it back by cutting the heads. When I do buy another motor it will be a 3 liter.

What else can I do on a budget to wake up the 200XRI?
