You left out the best part... I have the perfect thing to hold over his head.
He was 8 years old when we filmed that early this summer (he's now 9). Over christmas break I made hime tear down the engine (15 Evinrude) by himself then list a bunch of old engine parts we have laying around on ebay to pay for the rebuild.

So, just how many V-6 outboard hydro's are out there?
I know of 5 Pughs:
1. Jon Wright
2. Jim Dunn
3. Barry Salsman
4. Marty Logan
5. The one AFR posted a pic of that sold a few years back (dont know who owns it now)

David Carver has a Pugh in his garage. He told me he wanted to break the prop record with it. I don't know if he started putting it together yet or not.
Freddie Webb has one with a V4 on it.

Wow!
Thats the shist!
That motor is one of the best things to happen to Stock O/B for a long time.
I ran A Stock for most of my nine yrs racing. It was a bitch because I was racing against guys that had run A sense those motors were new.
When the A Rude came out it instantly leveled the playing field and then being able to de-tune to J and have the same motor to grow into.
Great class and good for you and your son. Thats what Stock O/B is all about right there !

What is it like to drive an outboard hydro? Compared to say, an STV?
-

the best i can tell is the center of gravity is way different
like twice as low as a tunnel
other wise they feel about the same i would say
another way to say it is a hydro takes a set and stays there
as to a tunnel never really sets it moves up and down all the time
hydros are not an full length air entrapment hull
also a hydro is more a plane than boat
it pose to be t tottaly air born with only the prop touchLast edited by afr; 01-05-2008 at 03:30 PM.

look at warriors avatar that's a perfect set up
you cant get that with a tunnel i should also say and hold it as long safely
warrior can you post a bigger picture of your avatar for me
another example is to use the bubble theory
the tunnel cant release its bubble but out the back a hydro can release the bubble out the side
so as compression changes the hydro has a release
it simple reallyLast edited by afr; 01-05-2008 at 03:54 PM.

Now that I have mine running like it was intended, it's a blast to drive!!!
No drag on a hydro when the tail kicks... but, Scott, you have to be over 90 to feel that.
All the pics of mine are after I let off and the boat settles back in.
This is the only pic i have of the tail actually up. You can see the prop is half out of the water like it's suppose to run.

well i feel it and we didnt gps it the last time i didnt want to know
i am able to keep up pretty good now to the 2.5 stv
and my jacket is always on now i got to get in the habit of hooking the tether up
cant were a hat anyways tight backwards it dont matter it's coming off
lol
and i cant see squat for all the water poring out my eyes
but hey also you got to know where your center of gravity is for your boat
and every boat is different
two of the same is not the same
heres one thing i found and still looking into
this is what the air under the boat is doing according to theoryLast edited by afr; 01-05-2008 at 05:19 PM.

Scott, wait till you hit 140, the wind pushes your helmet so hard you have to look downward slightly. What a RUSH!!!!
I haven't taken this hydro any faster than 141, but my other toy, easily into the 160's....(canopy boat, on the river with no wind, and no spectators period)
Every time i try to make a speed run, it seems everyone wants to come watch, jet skis, wakeboard boats, bass boats, you name it, and at 130 I can feel every ripple in the water. I make passes late in the evening at the river along a steep bank full of trees to block any wind.
Now that our prop guy passed away, I stopped running speed and went to work on quickness. We'll see this season if it runs with the 1100+ hp blown alky boyz. (makes me feel all fuzzy inside knowing I can compete with them with a 260 hp, 153 cu in V-6) All it takes is $$$, and I went WAY over budget last year breakin chit, torchin motors, slingin props, and tryin new stuff.
