    V4 Hydro Old Pictures

Here are some old V4 Hydro pictures from 1974. I'm lucky to have these because back then my phone didn't take pictures. I had to do it the old fashioned way - use an Instamatic.

Great old pic, must have run great. Some big hair . I think I see a Chrysler Hydrovee green hull white stripe in the back ground.

    .
I was researching a different boat and ran across this picture. Here is an 11 footer setting the 100mph world record at the time with Gerry Walin at the helm.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I was 21 years old then.....that was not my ride....the guy that ran it bought it because he had a ride in my 10 foot b stock boat with a 44 e moter. I built that cause I had a ride in a FRR with a 90 Cid V4 on a Peterson overdrive....all before we knew better......that pix is when he first got the boat a locked stock omc gearcase with a 2 blade Michigan prop..... the next year he had a V4 with a strangler 1/1 gearcase on it. The motor was a built by who I don.t know.....he was running it one day....... and got between a skier and the boat.... he heard a TWANG.....ski rope twitching off the pullstart housing. He tried my 3 blade record and hit a sunken hull. The props were a pair off merc Bps.... Omc props do not re/fit merc....I am winding......

    very cool.

That was about the time I started paying attention and 2 yrs before I started racing.
My favorite era of racing. Everything was an experiment/new and changing in front of your eyes.

i built one of the first hydros w/a functional windshield (at least that I saw), you could tuck down behind it (reducing drag) and see by looking through multiple 2" holes I drilled through the dash.
the inspectors did not like it

I haven't taken this hydro any faster than 141, but my other toy, easily into the 160's....(canopy boat, on the river with no wind, and no spectators period)

Every time i try to make a speed run, it seems everyone wants to come watch, jet skis, wakeboard boats, bass boats, you name it, and at 130 I can feel every ripple in the water. I make passes late in the evening at the river along a steep bank full of trees to block any wind.

Now that our prop guy passed away, I stopped running speed and went to work on quickness. We'll see this season if it runs with the 1100+ hp blown alky boyz. (makes me feel all fuzzy inside knowing I can compete with them with a 260 hp, 153 cu in V-6) All it takes is $$$, and I went WAY over budget last year breakin chit, torchin motors, slingin props, and tryin new stuff.

I remember seeing this boat way back in the day on ft gibson lake in oklahkma at fun island. are you the same owner? I remember a guy named Glen rose saying it'd run 125 back then.
