Wartinger...
Devils Lake KIlo's in Oregon in this months Propeller mag.
Was basically blown out due to weather but Wartinger was there trying to set a record in a 125cc hydro but failed.
They said they thought that was a record that he did'nt set one for the first time ever
On top of having the O/B record outright the guy has more than 100 records to his name!
I used to run 20SSH against him back in the day.

Come on Tom....
I'll play if you'll play
#1 is me circa 1981 ish??? 20 ss hydro which was a jap made Yamato motor. Great motors and near bullet proof that came along at the end of old Merc race motor era.
The boat is a "Butts Aerowing" which was very popular and famous in the day.
It was fast with anything you clamped on the back!
#2 is also me an is actually a tunell instead of a 3 point. Legal in same class although no one could really make one competitive I had to try
Designed it to drive laying down and drilled holes through the dash board so I could keep my helmet totally out of the wind drag by watching through the holes in the dash
Design flaw #1. By laying down you move your center of garvity way too far forward for the small of boat and motor. (notice in this shot I'm on my knees which moved the C.G. back 6" - 12")
Design flaw #2. I made it shorter than standard to help it turn as our courses were being shortened so we spent more time in turns than on straightaways.
By being short, I did'nt have enough bottom "area" to build lift to carry my ass.
It was like a light switch. Needed 65 in class at the time to be competitive.
At 64 1/2 it ran flat and was just starting to lift.
At 65 it blew over
At its first race I stood it straight up on the back stretch, climbed up on the bow to save it and put my face through the plexi windshield (when it came down) in doing so.
Came in after the race and me and the boat looked like we got in a fight w/a chain saw
Completely blew it over 3 more times after that while testing, trying to figure it out before taking a sawzall to it, cutting it in 3 pcs and dragging it to the curb for the trash.

yep looks great bro
i am so glad i didn't get talked out of building the hydro
all tunnels as stated from the top experts with the world speed record
a tunnel boats top speed is from 140 to 160 and that's giving them a few more mph the record is like 156
but we know they turn on a dime and thats what i love about a tunnel
when i see those little boats it reminds of disney world,s little speed boats we use to play in all day
i keept getting beat and i was the smallest guy
so the dock master finally got me to come in asked me did i have it wide open i said yea
he said show me so i showed him how i was flooring it
he said ok get out a second pulled it up on the dock puled the plug drained and said ok here go get um
i passed everyone twice around the island
he called me one more time to re fuel me thats was it sun up to sun down
ithink i was like 8 years old three day i never left the dock
that must have cost mom and dad a fortune
they would come up and say you hungry its lunch time
i say no they said you sure i said yea off i went around the island again passing everything on the lakeLast edited by afr; 01-05-2008 at 08:31 AM.

#1. me again thias time in an A stock hydro w/a KG-4 in about '79 or '80 while testing.
Was just back from a Summer working for Tim Butts in Houston and he agreed to let me have a set of his patterns to build a boat when I got home.
I changed a lot of dimensions to it and added some aero dynamic tricks to it.
I used to say it was the fastest boat in a wind tunnel
Was also one I looked through the dash board to drive and had a 1 pc plexiglass windshield that I heated and bent to shape.
Ran OK w/a KG-4 but was better than sex w/a 20 H
#2. Is Tim Butts who I worked for in Houston in one of his own boats w/a 500cc Koneig on it.
This is one of my favorite boat race pixs of all time is very famous.
In the '70's his boats held every record and won every race there was!
He and they were the ****.
I was 19 when I worked for him. Pretty heady stuff for a young punk.

#1. me at 17 (rebel/hippy boat racing high school junior ) building hydro #2 and my first true race boat. Was a "Hedlund" that ruled the day. Had no clue what I was doing
Used mahogany for frames and stringers instead fo spruce like supposed to so the thing was a tank!
This boat also taught me about building one on a jig. Didn't know any better and it ran even worse because of that!
Flipped it over and straightened the bottom and picked up 3 MPH's!
Notice the hotty girlfriend waiting patiently so we could go burn one and then have sex
#2. I was famous Thats me in the middle at the start of a 20SS race. All my buddies were way late for the (timed/clock) start and I came from about 2 counties behind with it pinned! Jumped their wakes and stole the start.
Scared them silly Picture was on the front page of the paper in Zanesville Ohio the next day

last one
Heres where it all began
13yrs old, 8th grade
A 8' Glen L Tiny Titan.
Another one before I had a clue (or any help) about weight or building jigs.
Boat leaked so bad it sank at dock twice
Time I got it sealed up it must have weighed 200lbs!!
My first Merc too! 1947 KG-7 (??) as I recall. In it's final stages it had open pipes on it, a velocity stack off a mini bike, a nose cone I made out of a broom stick and bondo and a brass (shiny!) 2 blade Michigan "Speed" prop
Best of........39 MPH's
Noice the spring on the fish boat throttle lever
Was when my parents docked a boat at Lake Erie. I'd put the thing in April 1st and it stayed in the water until we pulled the cruiser the end of October
OK, now I feel old
Oh Mr. Foley.......your turnLast edited by Instigator; 01-05-2008 at 09:11 AM.
