Where do I read it?
Where can I read the famed article? How reliable will this 300 V6 be?

well ... we have seen some 3.0 loopers at 400++ but
like the mod 2.5s they are time bombs... but much stronger when they live.
seems that 340hp is common... the same time frame as a 2.5 300 drag merc.

omc cheep hp
just to add my 2 cents, i took a 96 200 johnrude witch i gave 4000 bucks for ,sent the block to monty told him i wanted a 7500 rpm motor that would live, he says 1200 bucks and break it in the way i tell ya and it will live. i put a set of 46 cc off set chamber heads on this thing , a set of big bore carbs ,played around with the jetting till i got it just right and i got a 320 hp motor that will spin a 31 pitch at 8000 rpm ,and all for about 6000 bucks. no brag just the facts. see ya at the rumble.

Sorry about the horror stories but would'nt have felt right w/o telling you of my experiences with my motor.
Guess the gig is, they're bullet proof as long as you don't F*&^ w/em lkike I did mine. (at least until you know what the hell you're doing)
Re-read the thread because some one already told you prices.
As far as possible HP's -------
I am just finishing assembling a looper that should make between 310 - 330 HP's if I did my work right??
Al Stoker who writes for Hot Boat (did the machine work on my block) is doing the article on the 300 HP looper. The article is actually written, just not printed yet.
I talked to him about it and the motor for his article is basically a rebuild of a motor he built for a customer 7 years earlier.
(yeah, it made that much power and lasted that long)
Don't know too much about this specific project and don't want to piss him off by divulging too much but basically what I do know is---------------
It made way over 300 HP easy, it did it with a stock rev limiter, it did it with all factory parts, it did it with medium bore carbs, and it did it on pump gas.
It also made un- godly torque, something in the range of 285 ft.lbs. with a very broad power curve.
With what you are wanting to know/do, I'd give him a call and ask him some questions about his services.
He is very smart about the OMC's, one of the best things he told me was, to not be like everyone else and try to make it spin like a Merc. You can do it, but you loose reliability and you get a very narrow power band with no torque.
Matter of fact, I think he is the only guy that even quotes torque specs???
I know I wanted to know this when re-powering my Sonic and none of the manufactueres listed it.
From what I hear about the HO's, if you change heads and fill the exhaust bleeds (very small holes just above exhaust port) and install 2.7 heads you would be in the 260 to 270 range.
Give Al a call at Johns Custom Marine at 714-827-7920
His job is not to give us free info over the phone all day, but he is the most knowledgable JohnRude guy I know, and his work is top knotch, prices are fair, and his work is done when he says it will be.
Monty Racing in Fla is also bad to dah bone and does only OMC's! Not sure how much he's still doing but he used to dominate drag racing with a JohnRude!! Gordon Montague @ 561-336-9508
Let me know if i can help you any more.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Hey at100
no bull on this thread. speedracer got a great price quote from Monty, (what year was that motor speed?) and Gary has had great dialogue with Stoker.
Oh and what was wrong w/ the HST? Didn't you have any duct tape?
That's my motor. I like it.
Come back into the light! or white or blue or gray ......Sea ya, Sleekster

better get one now
In the new line up there isn't any carb motors.
Johnson is all 4 strokes and Evinrude is all fichts from 2 hp to 250.
They do have a 225 HO Ficht.
The good ole carb days are gone.
MikeChange is a good thing.

That's what I thought!
If ata100+ is talking about new motors, he is talking ficht.
50 lbs heavier and way more money.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

new motors
I'd take one in a heartbeat. I run a 98 ficht 150 on my bass boat & you couldn't ask for a better motor. (It picked up 6 mph too)
I have run a ficht 225ho on a Stratos 21lx (customers new boat) and it was everything it should have been. It was a 78 mph boat that will probably last for 10-15 years.
There is an artical in the new Bass and Walleye on the new motors.
I just wonder whats going to happen to Merc now. They are going to have to quit producing the efi and carb motors.
Right now they (BMC too)can only produce so many dirty motors. Its like a 1 : 2 ratio I beleive. They can make 2 good motors or 1 bad one. And then by 2006 you can't have any...Change is a good thing.

Im the guy that bought your Vindicator 225.
(Jim MacAdams)
just wanted to let you know it's still running strong with the VRO attached and working fine.
Its on our 1981 Viking and I LOVE this motor!!
Buy another OMC I think you can't go wrong.
Good Luck JimToo much horsepower is just barely enough

Well,
Now that I have taken all the slop out of my Superboat/V8 with side mount marine machine steering, new steering shaft and solid mounts, I may be ready to sell. This is what I do, don't ask why. My family is talking me into a more sedate boat that my little kids can be safe on. Anyway, whether you and I can deal or you do something on your own, look at the V8. The power is amazing. Well into the 80s probably close to 90 when tweaking is done and I get enough seat time. Also, it runs like the stock motor it is, 700 rpm idle, quiet, plenty of low-end grunt and with such a great cruising speed, I imagine that this thing should last. You are not constantly wringing it out. Just my opinion. Cheap real power.
