    Promax oil injection

I bought a boat with a 97 225 promax in great condition. Everything is stock and nothing replaced or fixed other than a fuel pump. Im wanting to know how safe am i to keep running oil injestion or would it be a good idea to remove it and start mixing. Still has rev limiter and don't plan on running wot for extended period of times.

    thanks,

sound like a long disagreement thread in the making. i for one have never had any injections problems. my motor for the most part are stock 200 mercs. they never go over 6300. the limit for the oil injection is around 66-6700. i would keep it but inspect the plastic gear every year at end of season. having said that if you want a total insurance against oil inj failure then remove it.

I would remove it tomorrow and start mixing. Too great of a risk. When you ruin an engine because of it you'll be kicking yourself. JMO.

i have a 97 225 pro max...... still has oil inj hooked up....I have seen both sides of this... with gear failures in the past.. if your alarm system is in GOOD working order you have a warning & can mix it On the water with your 2 gal tank if needed because of a alarm (wich i did.)... haven't lost a power head yet because my alarm system works.... kurt

Plastic gear on crank is JUNK in my opinion................... worst thing Merc ever did to an outboard. My Merc Sportjet died with 8 hrs on the hour meter, and I switched it off the minute I hear the alarm and it still scuffed one. Two neighbors have lost bassboat powerheads with em, and these guys aren't hotrodders.

My confidence in plastic geared Merc oil injection systems is so low that I'd be afraid to pull one down the highway on the trailer with it hooked up.

So Norris, I take it that what you are saying is to remove the injection and use the block off plug made by MERCURY themselves for this exact purpose .

Yep! My Promax had less than 50hrs when I purchased it and it was the first thing I did.The plug was only $5 at my local Merc dealer.A lot cheaper than replacing a power head and better peace of mind that its getting oil.Chris
