Mercury 300xs
Hi guys,
Just wondering if anybody has had any experience with the belts on the 07' 300XS.I am having a problem with the belts on the flywheel/alternator/compressor that have a tendancy to keep breaking every so often.I have changed two belts already, one on each motor and today i checked the first belt that i changed and it too is starting to sheer apart.I have not even put 25hrs on these brand new motors and i have changed two and am about to change the third belt.Does anyone have an answer to this problem.

Check the torque on the compressor pulley bolts. We just sheared all but one bolt and had the same problem with belts. Also, make sure the alt and idler roll perfectly smooth. And DO NOT over tension the belt.

Take it in to a good dealer for warranty so this problem will be documented and corrected. We have several 300xs customers and hundreds of other opti customers, I have not seen but 2 belt problems since 1999, they were both on older engines that had a bolt holding the idler pulley before mercury went to the stud set up. Both failures were due to the idler pulley bolt backing out.

If the alternator cover isn't on just right the plastic will scrape against the belt and cause it to break. My belt actually wore a small hole into the alternator cover at 12 hours.
