Burgess F3
I have a Burgess F3 circuit catamaran, cannot seem to find much info on them,i believe they use a 850cc Short Shaft Yam or Evinrude, does any if know if any other engines have been used successfully as they are like hens teeth, i think having a 90 yam and lifting it 5 inches would affect the balance and Handling not sure.
This is to be my winter project this year so trying to get all the info together about these.

Hi Gazza,
your info is right. Tor was racing F3 back in the 80´s.
There was only Johnson or Evinrude used for F3. Cees Van der Velden was the guy supporting the series with parts and engines. Both models have been similar 850ccm blocks ca. 100-110 HP. The category died some few years ago.

You Guys are brilliant,
The hull is in surprising good condition for that age ( seems the same age as my old Campbell / Gordon Wright cat), all wood seems to be ok where i'm getting access, had the endoscope from work to check the areas i could not see at first everything looks fine,
There is just an area from getting in and out on the left hand side which needs a repair on the outside skin.
So what speed did these do in race trim?

All the info is right. You lucky bugger. Now all we need to get you is a motor.Mercs did have a 65 GT type motor with V'ed reads behind the carbs but the motors were all from Cees. However, if you get an 86 or later 70 OMC they were bigger and prop rated. Loads of torque & would rev. The exhaust however come out the opposite side of the block but cast an adapter plate, cut 5" off a later 50 hp if you cant find a genuine.. "stinger". Make up you're own nose cone and low water pick up,A 3 or 4 blade cleaver over the hub exhaust and or releaf the exhaust above the "cav" plate. Ritchen the carbs high speed jets. If you can find someone with a peak voltage metre you can tune the motor using that, but you'll need someone with big balls to hang on and read it!. The last time I did that was on a guys boat on Lake Widermere with a Jonnie V8. Silly me!! Older and wiser now I hope. All the best and good luck. Phil

You could check in the US for an sst 60 motor. We still race this class in the US. A site you may want to check out is APR Super league. This is the series that races the SST 60. In the states the motor is a an OMC 3cylinder with the smaller standard foot nose coned gearcase. The engine is 56 cubic inches or about 900 cc. The boats will run low to mid 80's miles per hour on a race course. There was a 3 cylinder Yamaha 70 that also worked well on these boats but were not used in the US.
The 90 Yamaha with some port work on a short shaft midsection and smaller lower unit would be a fun ride. There were some outlaw classes that a few people ran the 90 yamaha on a short shaft mariner 60 mid section and lower unit with a nose cone.
If you could find a good SST 60 motor that would be the easiest way to go.

Greg Jacobsen at Sea Way Marine in Seattle, WA (USA) is an expert on F3 as well. He has much of the former OMC racing engine parts, etc. from 45SST to SST60. He raced F3 I believe as well at least one year. He is on here as SWMJake.
