    overheating alarm 2.4 race motor

    Hi, I was on the water today and the alarm started sounding at 53 mph and 4000 rpm and above. would stop when boat slowed to 45 or less. temp guage when running is never over 1/8. goes to 1/4 when idling with no alarm sound. water pressure this occurs is 18 - 20 psi with strong flow from piss tubes. could it be a bad temp sender? no work done to motor prior to this happening. motor runs great. it is a 1988 motor on a 1987 stv pro comp with the prop about 1/2" above pad. thanks Skip

    Could be ...

    Replace it with a temp gauge and you will not have to guess. The sender works by grounding the circuit. Someone more knowledgeable will offer more assistance. Mike

    you say race motor. Does this mean it has a complete race motor coolin' system? ie: one piece adapter, diverters, washers (no stats), no poppet.
    Tha reason I ask this is cause tha pressure sounds a little high for this type of coolin' system.

    Still doesn't tell me which system it has. If it has tha two piece adapter, T-stats and poppet this is the what I do that with older motors. If it hasn't been into lately I would put in all new stuff. New water pump "kit", not just tha impellar, new stats, new poppet. This eliminates all of these parts and not that pricey compared ta the rebuild if it smokes while changin' and tryin' one piece at a time. If it still overheats after this, ya gonna have ta dig a little deeper. Like Mike said get ya a good temp gauge anyway. Just maybe its a faulty temp sensor.

    has no t-stats, did a search and something similar on a previous post that had a stuck poppet. will try that. anyone have a part number? thanks

    Just a suggestion. These motors need ta have either stats or restrictor washers with either (stock or hot rod) coolin' system ta make 'em perform up ta snuff. Your problem sounds like tha water isn't stayin' in tha block long enough ta do its job or your losin' volume. Hope ya get it workrd out........T

    BTW, stock factory 2.4 hot rods don't have poppits, just block off plates.

    it's had washers since I got it. gonna try poppet valve, might be stuck closed explaining why pressure is higher than normal. will let you know. thanks for your help. Skip

    If you have no washers or T-stats the water leaves the block before it goes through the heads. The temp sensor is in the heads so it could easily show an overheat.
