Another cool owners guide. Is that a powercat back there? What is the white one pointed toward you? Weird pole to tie boats in a circle to, don't ya think?

The white boat has me stumped too.It is not a Glasspar G-3,deck is wrong and steering wheel is on the wrong side.I vaguely remember it,but my old brain just won't connect. Anyone know?

I think the white boat pointed toward us is a Nylox "Phantom" claimed 52 mph with a 100 hp Merc

You got it 75H,thanks for refreshing my memory. As I recall,a California boat, advertised back then in the old Powerboat mag, tested,I believe,in one issue by Bob Nordskog?I remember lusting after one of those back when, but they were unavailable in Alabama,so I bought a new 1963 G-3 instead.

1962...this is the first black Mercury Outboard. The awesome (it really was back then, you young wippersnappers ) One Hundred Horsepower Merc. Somewhere back in this post, I show the first one we recieved in October 1961. The first year had the silver shocks, later they were black.
Nice shot of "The Lake" when it was all just getting rolling. Just think of all the activity that went on here in the next few years. Life was so simple...

When I wanted a new 1000 for my G-3,Keith's Hardware(Merc dealer in Birmingham) ran an ad in the Bham paper, pricing them at $995. I remember calling him and asking if he had a short shaft in stock, answer was no but he could get one from Atlanta,so I bought one,and it had the silver shocks. I think I paid a few bucks more for the contol box and wiring harness, and also extra for the prop, and 2 control cables.I believe the Ride Guide steering arm connector was included in the $995 price

Barron, where have you been? Do you ever plan on racing again? Did you always run right hand rotation lower units or did you try left hand also? Is Don still alive? What happened to the motors?

2004...The Toy as it looks today. It had been on the wall in my shop behind the boat. With the cowling removed, a helper and I carried it through that walk in door that you see. The builder, Tommy Drodz of Denton, Texas said it weighed 175 Lbs bare. Even though we never weighed it, I believe it. When we carried it in it had the seat, steering, wiring, ect. in it. I'm 5'9" 175 lbs and was 50 years old when we carried it through that door and it really wasn't heavy at all.
Tommy Drodz of Lake Dallas Boat Company, had built and raced round track tunnels and his brother was killed in a race accident around the time The Toy was built, 1985. Has anyone ever had or seen one of his boats or heard of Tommy?

Barron, put a motor on that boat and come to Kentucky lake first weekend of June. You and I are about the same size maybe you could give me some pointers on my ride.

Hi Freddie. Didn't see your post before my last one. No I do not plan to race, but may motor around for vintage viewing one day. Don is doing well, even though I have only seen him once in ten years. Never ran a lefty on The Toy, but did run one on The Sting, the last season I raced. That year I ran The Toy with a right hand and The Sting with a left hand lower and let me tell you, it was confusing. You could imagine the torque coming off the line will full throttle and N2O flowing. One carried the left sponson until half track and the other carried the right sponson 'till half track. What was once second nature, I now had to do some thinking before lightin' the candles...

Testing one cold winter day in 1986. Looks like lots of ponies being laid down.
