300xs????
hey guys just got a bullet 20xd with a 300 xs i am not sure how many hours it has ran it for the first time today- my dealer ran it for a hour or so i put on 2 and a half today.
my dealer mentioned the motor waking up after a little time- he said it is programed to run below the max rpms it can run.
our convo was cut short. can anyone tell me more- like what hours it should "wake up" at?
PS: learning to drive the bullet is a huge learning curve for me so i ran it for a short burst and seemed to only get about 5400 or so rpms and got 82 on the hand held gps before chine got to bad for me- by the end of the day i was getting a hang of it but it was too rough to run. i will get more speed i am sure of it, but need some time to learn the boat.
anyways what is known about the merc break in.
thank you

opti break-in
To take time off break-in mode, you need to run continously and for a sustained period of time in between the r.p.m. ranges [(1,000-1,999)(2,000-2,999)(3,000-3,999),etc.]. Just doing short bursts of acceleration/deacceleration does not take time off of break-in. When I worked at a Merc dealer, we often would get in motors with 200-300 hours of run time on them and they were still in break-in mode. Most of these motors were walleye fisherman, and when I checked the run history, the majority of their time on the motor was at lower r.p.m.s. That was nice for me, because then I was able to take the boat to the lake and run the piss out of it until the break-in times were met.Perks of the job!!

Usually the new motors come with a factory sticker on them that tells ya the break in procedure and it is also in the hand book that comes with the motor..
My 225X and 300X both seemed to lossen up between 25 and 50 hrs,, The 300X only had one real hr of break in then just vary rpm's for the next few hrs.
Bullets are easier to drive if ya keep the gas tank full and water in the wells, also balanceing the boat is very important!!!
If you are driving her your self take a 4' level and place it on the deck across the boat, sit in the driver seat and see which side needs weight to make it level.. Place taackle , apare props, or bags of shot on the side that needs the weight, sould be the passenger side...
Also once broke in you will be able to raise your motor to between 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 depending on prop and load.. This is assumeing you have a sportmaster lower unit (which you NEED to have)... minimum water pressure would be 12# at wot, I like to see 15 myself..
Best I got out of my 20xd 300X was 104 once and consistant 100 to 102 lite and would fish at 95+... Louis07 STROKER 300X

300XS doesn't have a break-in rpm limiter. It runs extra oil controlled by the ECM. Read the manual which outlines the procedure.

Wizzard on this site ran 91 with his bullet/300xs combo.
Be safe and get lots of seat time before the top end runs.

I don`t know anything about Opti motors but I can tell you how to learn to drive a Bullet. I have taught several people to do it and the most common misstake is over trimming the motor as if were a normal heavy basser. Had one guy swear his Bullet had a bent bottom. After a few hours with him he could do pretty decent. Set the motor at a conservative trim possition and push the throttle about 3/4 and gently trim the motor till the boat feels free. Run it there for a while till you feel comfortable then do it all over again untill you can do it with full throttle. Don`t drive it as if were a regular basser. 20ft Bullet`s don`t like a bunch of trim. In time you will get the hang of it. Good luck and remember to wear your life jacket and hook up your kill switch.

we have it pretty much broken in prob around 8 hours or so, just waiting for a calm enough day to start to bump up the throttel and get a feel for the boat!

Keep in mind when proping out your new 300xs that max HP is at 5875 not the redline of 6200+ RPM.

The Merc smartcraft gauge counts down the hours for you automatically based on rpm and load. Once the break in hours hit zero you can trounce on it. Even off break in mine was very tight. I was using a 27 Trophy that pitched closer to 29 (modded) and I could not get over 5400 during break in. After the 10 hours were up it started to pick up about 50rpm every hour or so. I dumped the Trophy and now have a Bravo and a Performer 4. My engine was still very tight until it hit 30 hours and then really woke up! I now can run the 28 Bullet Cut Performer to 91 at 6200 rpms with the propshaft about 1.5" above the pad.
Again this is with a 21ft XDC. You should easily see high 90's with your rig once it "wakes up" and with the right prop. If it were my boat I would get the 30p Bullet Cut Performer 4 or the 28 Pro-ET.
Now driving it....that's a different story.
