stv
anything under 500 # and 20" mid. V6
merc 260, 280, 300 drag, OMC V6, merc 300X, merc 250,300XS. It really comes down to wieght limits, and how big your balls are. I have calculated that my balls are only big enough to do about 110 mph till after I do some more setup work.
What boat did you get ?
Got any pictures ?

motor
Keep in mind that you can also go have a good time with a 200 merc on the boat and do 90's. ya can do 90 easy and cheap, but if you want to do 100+++ then it will cost ya and there is alot to learn.

as much horse power as you can afford!!!!!!!!!!!!
ive heard of guys going from 150 hp to well over 300.
it all depends on how reliable you want it and how big
your check book is. i've had a whooped up 2.4 200
on my euro, a 260, a mod. 260, a 280, modified 280,
300 drag, and now a 300x.current rides-
DCB Mach 22, twin 2.5
2002 Bullet 20 XDC
1991 Checkmate Pulse 225 Promax
Jamis Zenith Elite road bike-one old man power
past rides- four stv's, one 21 liberator, one mirage and a glasstron and a few pontoon boats and a duck boat.
past power-2.5's, 200, 260,280, drag. 3.0 L-225, 300x
No more dirtbikes!

I'll take the other slant.
A safe motor size is one which doesn't require modifications in a year or two.
Will push the boat faster than you want to go now, since you will want to go faster later.
Doesn't require exotics like special racing fuel that you can't find or afford. Somewhat sane revolutions so rebuild times are far apart and not every hour.
I think this is actually what is on your mind from other posts. This is the safe power sticker.
Note the powering limit.
Also there are what? 3 types of Stvs? 4? 5? euro-ski boat interior EXTRA wide, river rocket -4 bucket seats, procomp ski- 2 buckets and a 1.5 bench. Narrow and semi narrow and wide cockpits. The hulls are the same but the decks are different.Last edited by Techno; 07-07-2007 at 12:09 PM.

Which STV are you talking about , Pickel Fork (current type) or Needle Nose ( Laze type) ? If it's a Lazer type hull , I would stay under 200 hp till you really learn the boat , expessally if it's a lite one . Rich Martin 018

buy big if u already have some experience driving tunnels. I originally put a merc 200 with 34cc cut heads on my stv. It was a good motor to learn the ins and outs of the boat, but I quickly outgrew the 200. As mentioned above, what is good enough right now probably will be too slow in the near future. Second, the euro (not sure what model you are getting) clears the air bubble in the low to mid 80's. While I was able to get low 90's out of my 200, i was at the end of my power curve with that motor and getting through the hop (trying to clear the bubble) was a bit of a challenge compared to the 260; now all I have to do is stab the throttle and I do not notice the hop at all.
Once you outgrow a smaller motor, you will be faced with spending the money on modifying the smaller motor for more power, or buying a bigger powerhead- why not buy the bigger one now and save some money in the long run? Additionally, IMHO, it will be safer to have the bigger motor like a 260, 280 because you have the power too get through the hop easily. You can always still keep it under 7000 rpms and get the longevity out of the motor, butt it is nice to have the power when you want it.
