    300 promax starting issue?

i ran my batteries down on my 300 promax and tried to start it with low voltage. never got it fired and had to get a tow in. bought 2 new batteries charged them up and starter turned but bendex gear would not rise and engage the flywheel. thought i burned the starter so i bought a new one...well new starter does the same thing. where do i look next?

Im no expert but since know one has chimed in, this is what I have hear in the past. You need to have fully charged 1000 Cold crank amps to turn over your motor properly. There was a guy with 800cca and had the same type of problem then got some heavy duty 1000's and no more trouble. Also you should disconect your bateries after each day and charge em up before each day out. Its a little overkill but works for me. An onboard charger is nice you just plug her in the night before and in the morning you know your full charged. It may be to simple but this is what I have heard it being before. Hope thats all it is. James

My 98 300PM started fine with one of the smaller average size batteries. That engine has a 50+ amp alternator so keeping the batteries charged like some older Merc's isn't needed.

If the batteries are new then look elsewhere. Sounds like the starter isn't spinning fast enough to make the bendix engauge. Check the battery cables, not just look at them but remove the conections and clean them, especially the ground cable on the block.

Check the voltage at the starter solenoid cables while cranking, they should be close to each other and be near 12v. Do you know how to do voltage drop tests on the (+) & (-) battery cables?

I don't know how to do a voltage drop test...

but I decided to buy a solenoid since they are cheap. If that doesn't work I will inspect the cables. If that doesn't work I will light it on fire!

It will go it's probably one of the most reliable high perf motors out, they suck gas but go for ever.

If you got 10+ volts at the starter when you hit the key then it's most likely a starter. Remove the starter and then use jumper cables from a good battery and see if it runs. (-) to starter case and (+) on stud.
