2 Stroke days numbered?
OK, I went over to the local Merc shop at lunch to pick up a lifting ring. While I was there, I got to talking with the guy and asked him about the Optis he had in stock. He told me that the EPA is forcing the manufacturers to stop making 2 strokes of any type and the DFI's will be out of production by 2010. Have any of you heard of such an outrage? Maybe someone from Merc can clarify this.

That's exactly what I was thinking 1Bad. The DFI's are cleaner and get better mpg than the 4 strokes so why would they ban them? I only went over there to get the lift ring as he was the closest to the office, otherwise I have a great guy closer to the house that gets all of my work that I can't handle.

someone was smokin some good crack if MERC goes all 4 stroke that MERC's choice... not the EPA.... to date the EPA has never banned any given technology..... they just limmit the % of emmissions and some technologies become obsolete due to restrictions BUT never ILLEGAL!!!

I agree, the EPA doesn't outright ban things, they just make the emissions level so low the straight up 2 stroke could never meet them, so a de facto ban on them.

Lake Mead will ban all carbureted 2-strokes starting Jan 1, 2012. I have to see if my slOMC V8's retro'd with EFI will pass...hell, the rangers wouldn't know anyway!
Put an EFI sticker on the cowl and I'm good.Keith-

LOL ... the two stroke's days have been "numbered" ever since the 4 stroke was invented ... about 130 years and counting ... Chicken Little's declaration about the sky was more accurate
A few years before Jaguar sold out to Ford they were considering a DFI 2 stroke V-6 car motor and had even signed a contract with Tecumseh to make the blocks in Ohio
