Painting over gel?
My big boat just had a new floor put in it and the guy sprayed gel coat on it but it turned out sh###ty. I was planing on painting the rest of the boat anyway, so how hard is it to spray over the gel? Do I just prep it like it was painted or is there something special I will have to do to get the paint to stick to gel?

Personally I'd go over it again with gelcoat. It's thicker then paint, and will hold up better in traffic. Try mixing some Aerosil or Cab o sil to the gel to thicken it up, just alittle. Then using a paint roller with an Adhesive roller head, roll it on. Not too thick. It gives a great nonskid. Tape off the area first to give a clean line. If the nap on the nonskid turns out alittle pointy, go over it quick with a DA with 400.
Or you can go the paint route. Interlux makes a product called Polymeric nonskid compound. Comes in Fine Medium and Course. It's a powder thats mixed with the paint. Can be sprayed or rolled on. Works great with Awlgrip, and will last for years. But more $ then gelcoat.
I've non-skidded alot of decks and floors in the past 30 years.

I had my 20yr old Bahner "cleared" this spring and it shine like new money!! If you do "paint" it understand that it IS NOT as tough as gel.The clear is soft,I am kinda goofy about tying up to just any thing or anybody..
