    Bad News Good News

Took boat to be tuned and dynoed. 77 Challenger with 200 2.4. Compression was 150 on port side and 128 90 138 on starboard. Mechanic said the chrome was worn right off cylinder. I bought this boat last year with only 40 hours on a rebuild, yeah right. Buyer beware. So it needs a sleeve and maybe a lower crank bearing. THe oil fitting for this was broken off and the oil line was tucked in with the rest of the lines. The good news is the boat ran 68 in this condition befor I had the heads cut this winter. Hoping when its running strong on all 6 to get inoto the 70's.

Ouch, that ain't good. You didn't run a compression test before you bought it? How'd the cyl look when you had the heads off to get em cut?

im not defending the seller here, but short of tearing into the engine
when buying you cant be sure. maybe that oil line came off. i cant
imagine it would of ran more than a day or two if the seller had it
unhooked and tucked away. that cylinder should have gone out
very fast without any oil. i think it would be imposssible for it to
run 40 hours w/out oil in a cylinder.

    Bad news

No I didn't do a compression check which I'm now sorry. It was late and I was in Long Island away from home and the traffic sucked. The oil line that was broken off is to the bearing at the bottom of engine below carbs. This is my first outboard and when I had the heads off I thought everything looked fine. In fact the cylinder that was bad I thought already had a steel sleeve in it because I didn't see the chrome like the others. I'm learning. ( the hard way) I'll be running again in a week. George at Fuller Marine is a great guy and won't let me down.

The lines going to individual cylinders are NOT how the cyl's get oil. Whether oil injected or premixed, the oil supply comes to the cyls mixed with the fuel. Those hoses are bleed lines to keep fuel from puddling.

As far as George Fuller............ I bought some stuff from him several years ago, a couple of different times, and had occasion to talk to him on the phone. I think he's a first class guy and seems VERY knowledgeable. I think you're in good hands there.

hmmm.... i just bought my first oil injected engine and im new to it. it has an oil pump
with six lines coming out of the pump going into the side of the engine. i never saw
bleed lines coming from a pump.

Mike's engine can in to be dyno'ed and have the carbs jetted for a set of heads that we had cut for him in the fall. When i rolled the engine over to warm it up, i noticed when cranking, it appeared to be missing a hole. I removed the hood and inspected the powerhead and found the recirc line from the lower bearing to the upper was snapped off and the hose was in the air box. Also noted that no washers under the head bolts. Compression check showed # 3 was hurt. Looked in and saw chrome was hurt. Will pull the powerhead down tomorrow and see whats inside........George PS Thanks for the kind words!!!!

I'm not familiar with the 300X, which from your signature is what I'm assuming you're talking about, but the engine in question here is a 2.4 and all the small hoses on 2.4's that were so equipped were bleed hoses.
That having been said, it would surprise me if the 300X shoots straight oil through hoses without blending with fuel somewhere.

i would have thought the same thing about the fuel/oil mixing somewhere.
the oil pump is on the side of the block the injectors are on, and the oil
lines go to the other side and into fittings in the side of the block. maybe
the pressure pushes it across to meet the gas somewhere. like i said
i am totally new to oil injection, never had it before. i thought the oil
pumps on the older engines were off a gear or something on the crank,
    this one is electric.

Saw George and my block is shot. Hopes to have replacement for me and get me up and running again. If it were 70 degrees out I'd be pissed but aint going anywhere in this cold.
