Matt, sounds like a lot of fun!! I would rebuild using composite materials so you will never have to worry about rot again. High Density Mantex for the transom and stringers will keep the boat light and indestructable. If you need any help I've got the right guy to do the work in Pompano Beach. PM me if you need his number. Steve

Found the rubrail by searching on google, http://www.wefcorubber.com/extrusion..._rub_rails.asp .

Took the boat off the trailer and flipped it to make the jig. The pad is pretty flat, within 1/16" over the aft 3'. A little dip about 6" fwd and another about 30".

The pad is 7.25" wide and right around 7' long depending on how you measure it.

Have the first station roughed in but needs some fine-tuning.

Finished building the support fixture. I was having a hard time getting the wood to match the hull, so I bedded it in a fat bead of silicon seal to take up any gaps.

Also pulled the rubrail while it was upside-down. Couldn't cut them off, tried grinding them but they still wouldn't pull through the aluminum. I ended up pulling the rubrail off with pliers. The deck is fine, but on the hull half of the rivet heads pulled through the fiberglass, and the other half pulled through or broke the aluminum. Also a good portion of the forward end of the deck is not bonded at all to the hull, so it looks like we'll have to pull the deck altogether. That will make getting the rest of the rivets out a lot easier, and also repairing the forward hull and the flange where the rivets were.

Now comes the messy part, cutting & grinding all the old wood and fiberglass out. It'll probably be a couple weeks before I can get started on that.

Now that is an awsome boat to do a resto on. The Vandal and Venturas are worth the time. Good luck Matt.

So now the itchy time begins.

Once I got the rubrail off I decided to split the deck off the hull. It was open in the front anyways, and it makes it much easier to repair the deck and the fwd portion of the hull.

I ran a thin sawzall blade up in the seam. It was glued with resin in a few areas, glued with some kind of flexible black adhesive in others, and not attached at all in some places.

I cut out the splashwell to release the deck at the transom, as I won't be keeping the splashwell anyways.

The deck might weigh 75 pounds, its pretty easy to pick up and move around. It has some thin core running up the flat center section, and 1/4 inch ply along the gunnels.

Not sure what to do with the deck while its off the boat, need to find somewhere to store it.

We're making it center-steer. I'm considering cutting out the hump for the steering on the right side, or maybe even cutting out both dished areas and filling them in flat for a more sleek look. The splashwell is getting filled in flat and I'm adding a small fairing in front of the engine.

    killing me!

Matt, you're making me want to go get another Vandal!

I have too many project boats in the works now!

Maybe I'll sell my Viking when it's done and get a Vandal.

John--When it's done, come down for a ride

Not sure where you are right now, but once we (Matt) get the Vandal done, we need to drag you down to River Ranch or one of the other get togethers and reunite you with her.
