You are going to have to check everything. One of my 2.5 was fouling a lot of plugs. I found loose grounds to the switch boxes, the timing spring was weak and was not allowing full advance, and the coils were weak. The trick is to find the problem(s) without spending too much money. Start with the cheap stuff and go up. Check all of your grounds and make sure you are getting full advance first.

I will try to check all grounds tonight. The coils seem to have good spark with the plugs pulled. Can I check coil voltage with a volt meter? Search isn't pulling up any older archives.

    Motor fouls and smokes badly

Im getting lots of sludge coming out the exhaust and pooling on the ground while being run on a hose. I am getting 6 inches vacuume at idle.
My grounds all look good, nothing loose or obvious. The motor runs crappy at idle below 3000 hardly gets up on plane. Then it runs pritty strong at higher rpms, scared to run her over 6000. What Ya Think? Does anyone know a good high performance Merc technician that can diagnois my engine? I need some advice, this thing is making Mercs look bad! Mostly Yamis over here! Call & ask for Big John at Pro 941-721-3000 or 800-621-7761. He worked at Lake X for 16 years or something like that, set up a lot of race motors but mostly offshore. He lives in your area too and has his own shop in Sarasota. Can't hurt.

    you say....

plugs have good spark when pulled (appears to be working)

smokes badly (fuel is trying to be burned)

puddle of sludge when running on the hose (running rich)

hard time planing out (trying to clear excess fuel)

my thoughts... assuming that it's fuel injected (you said it's a hi-po merc) sounds like you have some injectors not closing and always dripping giving way to much fuel & flooding it

pull the injectors and turn the key to "on" let the pump pressurize the system and see if they are dripping (not closing all the way)

if it's a hi-perf carbed, check the needles and seats as well as the float heights

i could be wrong but thats my initial thoughts on it

It is fuel injected with analog tpi. I pulled the fuel rail and ran pump only and no leaking injectors. I then cranked motor over and all injectors firing ok, they all spray an even pattern. I recently replaced the computer because the 2 center injectors weren't firing. Now they all fire but still smokes badly. More thoughts? The sludge is terrable at the exhaust outlets, like 1/4" deep of slop after only 60 seconds run time.

you say you replaced the TPI? is it the old style on top of the intake snout connected into the intake butterfly? it may be set wrong and making it run super rich, i had one like that and it gave me a bunch of grief till i updated it, but it can be re-set, i forget the numbers to set it to though it's been a long time ago

EDIT: heres a link to a discussion on setting the TPI/TPS voltage readings...

It has the big horn throttlebody with a temp sensor only. It has a vacuume line running to what I call a map sensor 3"X4" box on the side with 2 vacuume nipples. 1 nipple has a vacuum line leeding to intake and the other is open and not plugged. Would this make a vacuume leak? It has a gold fuel regulator and fuel pressure reads 39psi.

thats the same TPI that i went to and it worked fine

your running real rich for some reason, at this point i would try a known to work ECU and see if it runs correctly on the hose, if it does then the ECU is the problem

you may consider calling the guy posted above thats in your area to trouble shoot it for ya
