Baja 16ss 150?
I have a Baja 16ss that I am going to repaint and fix-up this spring, I was just wondering if it would be a foolish idea to look at a 150 for this boat. Not having a pad to speak of would this hull be too unstable to run at high speeds? Currently it has a Merc inline 90 and I get about 52ish with a 21p Cabelas high perf prop. I'll post some before and after pictures once I start with the project...

these boats will take a much larger motor than they are rated for. mine is rated for 150 but has been run with a 235 since 1978 with no problem.

16 SS Baja
wow, finally somebody else with one of these. i've had two of these, one in1979,with a 115 merc and no trim. ran 49 mph indicated, but was a real squirrel bucket to drive. was a excellent ski boat though. my current ride is a 16ss i picked up with a 115 merc and a cmc trim kit. this sets the motor back about 6 inches and i think this is what this hull needs. if you have trim, find a set back bracket on this site. don't even think about a v6, it's way too heavy for it. my ride set up like this and a 21 pitch stainless round ear ran 52 mph on gps. mwillis had a boat just like this also, and you could call him on info. mark's number 262 389 0535 or you can call me, jay wagner at 262 424 3880

Baja
You're only getting 52 with a 21p? My 16ss with a Merc 90 runs 50+ with a 21p Cabelas high performance prop. Oh well, you're right if i try to fly the hull at all it gets all kinds of squirrely.

Hey guys its great to see these old Baja's are still out there. I'm running an 88 170 sport (17') with the 115 mecury, 20 pitch Lazer II. I trim it up to the "sweet spot" and torque steer goes away, it stops dancing. and GPS says 60.2 I don't know what all mods have been done if any. I'd like to see some pics of these old Baja's. I'd be glad to share my setup but I'm new to this, so if you let me know what you want to know

I retored a 1977 16ss Baja wit a 115 Johnson, it runs around 48 with a 13 x 19 prop. Plan on trying a 21 pitch to see if I can get a little more speed.
Check out the link to see pictures of the restore.

I run 150hp 2.0 (stock) on my Baja 16 with no problem. Kinda squirrely at times.

ddavisr, that's an awesome project.
I have a Baja Sport 184 with a GT200. Havn't had it propped enough yet though so it hasn't been over 65MPH on GPS with my 4 blade 23" stainless. It is neat to see these old Baja's, seem to be rare around here.Baja Sport 184 w/ '90 Johnson GT200

Thank you Ric, yes Im very close to the Ausable river. We have a place about 5 miles south of Oscoda. Spend alot of time at Foot Dam, great place for boating. I take a couple of weeks off for the 4 of July and Im sure we will be spending some time in that area.

Started another project, a 10 foot GW Invader. This a fun boat, enjoy it more then any jet ski and kids cant get enough off it so I decided to restore it. I got a old 18hp Johnson that will push this boat about 25 to 30. Its rated for a 50 but that seems like just way to much motor for this boat.

The stream runs 92+.
That's an unusually light 17' Baja if you can break 55 with an inline. Most of them are wet and heavy and don't run quite as well.
I used to own one of these. A bit squirrely, but fun.'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI
