Your talking about the f1 v8 3.5 ltr, less than 450hp ( 30 years ago, imagine some up to date porting???)
Not a part in common with a production v8
( ok spark plugs, coils and crankshaft damper)
You can actually make more hp with a highly modded production engine but it wont do 10k rpm like the later 3.0 f1 v8's
    I have a 3.0ltr f1 v8
Was all omc up north, they were not 2nd effort engines.

i am sure you seen this already
but what i do know is that second effort motor on that center console hurt a lot a feelings back in the day and swung the crap out of that 28 up to 8800 rpm / it made history and the guys that built are still there in the keys

    Yep, fastest outboard.
Greg Jacobsen has that boat now and is restoring it.
It did have nitrous but was only used to get up to speed, not sure how that was policed.
Do you have any photos of that centre console?
    Cheers

I wonder if now with cheap fuel and hulls being re designed for overweight 4 strokes, OMC V8's at 400hp ( with a small amount of work) might have a resurgence?

Second Effort Memories from a newbie

Reading this thread and all the talk about Second Effort takes me back to the days of Joe building engines, Babs answering phones. Gary and Les pulling the cover off the first F-1 capsule boat. That was a beautiful site seeing that boat win first time out at a local event with Gene Thibodeaux driving. My time there was limited but the lasting memories and the lasting effect Gary & Les had on boating are still talked about today. And to think I really was trying to get a job at the airboat shop next to Second Effort and while I was at the air boat shop for a interview a F-1 boat was turning laps on Lake Hamilton and I walked out of the air boat interview and the next day I was working in the parts dept with Chuck and my love of boats, fueled with Gas & Oil was fueled for a life time.

We just need the computer to drive an etec injector, the rest is easily doable.

I don't usually get involved in these discussions as I don't know alot about these motors but I do know this. A good friend of mine here in AZ bought Bill Marriott's 1988 32 Skater about 5 years ago with 10 hours of run time on 2 of the 3.5's with the non-shifting 20" twin pinion speedmaster lower units (left hand/right hand). In addition, Bill's mechanic was nice enough to provide a hand written maintenance manual for the motors and the drives (that came from the development team) that's pretty cool to read thru. He has since re-powered with triple 300xs's and both of the 3.5's are on stands in his shop. I may have some of the terminology wrong on this thread but these motors are the real deal.

I know he's 5-7 faster with the three mercs, however; if you measure performance by exhaust volume the blue motors would win hands down. I'm not sure he ever spun the 3.5's where they needed to run out of fear of expiring such a rare piece.
