Were those things as big a chore to turn as they looked?

[QUOTE=willabee;2525095][QUOTE=GENE LANHAM;2525079]Willabee: Who was 'Niels'---and what was the connection with Bobby Massey? Massey sure was active back then and certainly had caught the eye of Mercury. ......
..... I only remember the boat, don't recall the driver(s) ...... pic testLast edited by Old fiberglass; 09-01-2013 at 11:51 AM.

These are great pictures that I never have seen before. Where did you get them....have any more : - ) This wing was originally red and on loan from Mercury to Jan Schoonover. He first raced it at Salton Sea in 1967 with 1100 stackers. It was built in 1966 and he picked the lightest Mercury had at the time. A few years after Bob Massey got it he painted it yellow as seen in the picture. It was last raced at Parker in 1975 as a tribute to Bob Massey who had passed away years earlier. It was a dinosaur by then and probably the last wing ever to be raced. One eye witness said it was actually doing pretty good until a powerhead let go and that was that.

I believe Bob Massey's first big win with the white wing was at Parker 1968 he came in first outboard. Story goes Ted May wrecked the wing a year earlier. OMC figured the wing was a total loss, so it was given to Bob. He pieced it back together to come back to win first outboard Parker 1968. As best I can tell this is the wing that was on the Pearland Marine sign post in Texas for ~ 30 years.

Gene you were there when it happened in the Lonnie Todd wing at Parker in 1968. Don't know too much more about the white wing.

I am guessing Gene was actually the real driver of that one. After a name change it became " Red Bird". I don't know what became of Lonnie.

I found another wing shot that I don't think has been posted before.
