Thread: Switzer Wing pic's

At least three blew over that I know of.... Ernie Threlkeld ("Black Coffin" wing) went over with OMC's on the tail during a kilo run, Jan Schoonover ('Flying Dutchman" wing) put one over as well. Finally, some Air force pilot apparently flipped the "V nose" wing using excessive poewr trim in a test ride. There were also some dramatic crashes, most notably the one in which Jim Merten was almost killed when a triple Chrysler/Stylecraft cat ran over him in a race out west. Oh, and two of them sunk in Haverstraw Bay during the Hudson River Marathon in 1966.

I heard that the " El Lobo" wing running Chryslers sank in Smith Mountain Lake also. But that might just be an urban legend.

I hope that my dad sees this thread and posts the few pictures he has of his old wing - he used to own the V nose wing at one time (early 70's I think, way before my day).

Jeff, somewhere on S&F is the whole V front wing story - from when I got it until it was crashed in ND in 1973.

I remember that old V nose would drown you until you got it up and let the air out! Thank heaven for Bell Star helmets!.

Speaking of wrecked wings I could never get to the bottom of this wing. The picture was given to me by Roger Hoover who was part of Bob Massey's race crew. He took the picture, but does not recall anything about it. It certainly looks like it did not survive.
