Lower hp blocks will also have fewer reeds on some cylinders. You want the large port motors with 10 reed holes on both sides of the reed cage. Serial numbers don't tell you which they are, you have to look inside.

Just A Day At The Park
A day sometime in July of 1976 at Anderson Park in Tarpon Springs, Fl. These boats were owned my brother and myself back then, but were previously owned by two legends. The Rabco Streaker was one of many personal boats owned by the late and great Randy Rabe's (Parker's dad) of Rabco Racing fame. The Molinari was previously owned and actively campaigned by Jack Staples (Jody's dad) under the name of Whiff 'n Puff.
Those were the days....

Thats debatable, some know way more that me. BUT, we torched/"hole in one", a lotta blocks back then, and my 74 was a LWP gearcase. So if ya needed a new block, we did the XS on it. Its all in the serial numbers, (a "J" on the block tells all). Theres one here who would now..(Sam Chime in here!) Also, I will email my Merc Guru, the famous Dr Frankenmerc..he will know for sure.
OK, just called him about this. Told me the 74 1500, had simple "blue stripe..no XS", but the louvered cowl, but had the LWP gearcase, and all SS. If there a "J", on the block, its a XS. heres some info on it, years, serial numbers made ...
Mercury Outboard
Models 1974-76
Model Horse-power Serial Number Range Year
1974-76
Merc 45
1976

Merc 1500XS

So I believe you are right, as XS was 76, , BUT, the LWP, louvered cowl, was in 74. Look at those pix I posted mine. The one with the "rooster", is a original 74 1500, see the blue stripe? After I torched a block, did a 76 XS block on it, and added (next pic), XS decals. But ya know damn well, what ya think ya might have, probably not original, as the IL6's, been seen with many wraps, etc, but the "J" on the block, tells all..
