Stacks
Parker
I got them on ebay from Rom Hill.
He had 6 sets 4 like mine and 2 that were 6 into one.
I did not get the inner exhast plate and had to make one from a 1250 one.
Just got it put together and fired it up yesterday its sounds very cool and cant wait to run it on a boat this weekend.
They are regular mercury stacks.
I talked to Ron Hill at the Depue reunion and asked him about the angle.
He said the came from a collection of a female drag boat racer named Molly Ballou ( not shure on the spelling).
The story is with twins on the boat and very short mids (like 3 inchs) the lower pipes were dipping in the water.
So thats whats with the angles.
They are regular elbos with the supprt ribs machined off then cut near the flange and re welded.
They also removed all the spring attaching points and welded the megaphones on and polished them.
I dont now if it stand up to a maraton race but they have a sleeker differant look.
Im going to see how they look on the boat and may take them back to straght back.

1964 Merc 850
Just put this engine on my 1959 16ft cedar lapstrake. Will be ready for the water tuesday if the beast fires up. I think these are the tallest 6cly mercs evermade, a good 2-3 inches higher than the 1500. They are also the sleekest, the last of the real skinny Mercs. This engine is all original, except for the power trim(which was on the boat already). Hope to run it this week with a 17p prop, but I am sure that as the boat is very light that a higher pitch will be needed.

Got the motor rigged on the challenger and took it out thursday.
It sounds really cool cant believe how loud it was in the boat!!!
Will be taking ear plugs next time.
The boat has a 1350 high ratio gear case and the motor didnt wont to come on the power band without really over triming it.
Going to try a smaller prop this week.
Got some video but dont know how to post video??

I am amazed that you were able to run it without problems form your local law enforcement. I still remember just how loud they were. I live three miles from the coast and when they ran them back in the 70's, it sounded like a dozen chain saws running wide open in my back yard. Oh...how I miss that sound.
Great picture by the way.

They sure look cool Dale! Water injection would help on the bottom end but you sure wouldn't want to try it with them pointed up like that.

Whoa.....!
Dale, nice rig, but.......
1.Those stacks need water injection and normal (straight) orientation. The lack of acceleration without water injection was so severe that some single engine tunnel hulls couldn't run any speed downwind.
2. In addition the reason that the "big inline" (90 cu.in. and larger) stacks had secondary trumpets with springs holding them on rather than welded cones was because all of the welded versions cracked under marathon racing conditions..... and quickly.
3. Your engine height (x dimension) is unrealistically low.... Typical setup for that type of boat put the propshaft anywhere from even with, to no more than 1-2" below the bottom of the boat depending on water pressure and prop bite. Running that low will create unneccesary torque transfer and pitch the boat around considerably more than racing height.
4. I've never seen a "Stacker" with a stock lower unit.... we always ran with SSM's. Part of your "lugging" issue is undoubtedly because of the oversized gearcase and monstrous prop. The SSM's had a much smaller wheel and broke loose and "super cavitated" to give you enough power to get on plane.
You have a very small boat and a later, higher torque engine so you may get some performance out of this setup, but you seem to be leaving an enormous amount of speed potential and handling on the beach.
I hope that you take these suggestions in the right context. I am trying to be helpful and mean no disrespect.

P.S. I know a little of what I speak from firsthand experience...We set this up, back in the day...... In fact it was featured on some Merc PR back then...and was George Linder's third race boat.Last edited by T2x; 08-28-2007 at 09:00 AM.

I agree with everything.
I got them to put on my ct15 with the 12in mid and ssm.
I had a 1250 motor lying around just stuck them on it
I will be building a 1350 for them this winter.
I just got them and havent had time to make a 12in mid with a 1350 bolt pattern.
The Challenger has a 1250 and it was the fastest way to get to see how loud they are.
I havent got the ct fixed after the blow over but will have it done and the stacks on for Clayton!!!!!!!!!
Got the video on youtube not the greatest taken with a camera.
You can tell its not going anywhere very fast but you get some idea of the sound.
We dont have any problems with loud boats around here its a big river.
Dont know how to post a quick link to the site maybe someone can help me out.
Go to youtube search gold boat pipes.
