1974 and 1975 1500's did not come with the LWP gear case. If these motor were used in racing the owners changed to the LWP gear case in 1976 instead of buying a new motor. I know because that's what my brother did. His was a 1973 1500 with a LWP gear case. You had to do that to be competitive in the class.

Yes sir, as mine came from Bobby Switzer, hull, and he knew all the old school people back then..(like I should tell ya that).. with the old "horizontal", race rams, no tilt, just trim. Damn, who else remembers those, on old IL6's? I WISH I had took more pix, that old ride, but young and dumb...(gotta start somewhere I guess, then beat yer azz up for, "screwing up" a now..famous motor!) Damn, I LOVED that old "beast!"

I "kinda have to disagree here", But, we KNEW Bobby Switzer back then, and I actually bought the SS17/1500, (like the first rooster pic), and all original set up, 1974, off my friend a year later. Try and tell me that aint a LWP gearcase? And thats straight out Fox Lake Harbor too, new! Again, YES, we knew people back then, so it would have to be a big deal to get us, before what sold general public.
Ya have to remember here, what some the "try this stuff, what ya think?" went to many first, trusted, then slam a zillion more "made", if many approved.."OK>>BEAST!"
Heres a pic at (speedo then), 73. Ran a (tear up the gearcase), 14x28 2B cup prop, half out the water. And thats a original 1974 LWP case..AS FAR AS I REMEMBER/KNOW.

There were no low water pickup gearcases installed on any inline Mercury until 1976 except for speedmasters on twisters period and you can take that to the bank. The top J Sport racers in 1975 as in David Lee and Doug Pearl ran the standard side pickup 1500 gearcase. The time line was that the first 1974 1500 short Mercurys were standard blocks and there were no louvered cowls. during the 1974 model year the J block was introduced and the cowls went louver. All of the short 1975 1500s had louvers and J blocks and all had blue stipes. no blue stripe engines ever left the factory with a low water picup gearcase. One of the old members here won the J production at the ABPA national championship in 1975 with a Hydrostream with a 1500 and high pickups. I cannot think of his name. Either Pearl or Lee won the J sport with high pickups on the Scorpion or Leecraft. That guys are the facts. If a blue engine had low pickups it was changed out from 1976 parts and from a red engine. Pearl, Lee and several others had the best the factory offered to inline racers in 1975 and they had the high picup cases still.

OK, don't want to push this, on the LWP, others, but today, as asked the orig owner, still back in Illinois, long time Fox Lake party house. Any history. He called me back today. Well, we KNEW Bobby Switzer well back there, and he came into our channel on Pistakee one time, according to Glenn, with the new SS 17, forgot what Merc the back. HE WANTED ONE. So Bob said, "I will do the boat new, out the mold", but he could not sell independent, as Glenn would have to order the boat, through Fox Lake Harbor, Jim Moulis. So, after some "dealing", as Jim knew Bob well too..(as his dealer), , and Bob DAMN sure had "contacts.."Merc Marine". So Glenn orders a new Swit, SS 17, in 1974, and then, as far as he can remember, the motor was ordered off Bob. So Bob does the "Merc Moter", "what he wants on it"..what wanted, in 1974. Moulis does the rigging it, (again, as keep the "liability issue", proper, so don't get sued silly) and again damnit..HORIZANTAL TRIM ONLY Race Rams!) ANY SEEN THOSE?
Anyway, it was a blue stripe louvered wrap, SS L/U, and the prop, LIKE SAID, as in the Roost pic, etc. HAD TO BE A LWP case! But I do NOT know for sure, if it was a "J" block. Thats the only pic I have the orig "rooster", and doubt now, maybe, it was a "J" block?. And for the life of me, pretty sure those orig "Blues stripes, were not Mecr XS" But again..we "knew people, and Bob could get any Merc, offered. as a "builder". And, I got a solid 73mph out of it, on the pad, solid like ..well, like..(a solid grin on the face!) And it was no light boat either..just set up well...by "pros"..
So what I'm trying to say here, is simple. I KNOW what I had, first seen in 74, bought the boat 2 years later, from the orig owner, and he says .."did zip to it, but when the "Trigger went south..replaced". Best I can say here, is maybe some ya got the stuff we tested out first, and THEN, .."for sale"..
